Re: 1981 GL1100 "Dual Sport"
This has been my favorite bike since I put it together,
and like everyone's favorite screwdriver or 10mm. wrench, it the one that sees the most action.
I just put on it's 8th. set of tires (There's nothing like new tires !
).
That's a lot of tire changes in 6 years, due to me trying the 80/20 Shinko 705 tires.
They looked cool and performed well enough, but with the type of riding we do,
Loaded heavy, high miles, rough roads, I was wearing them out very fast.
Like 3500 - 4000 miles on a back tire.
I like my tires to last the season, so I switched back to street tires.
They do just fine on the dirt roads and last longer.
We have also wore out 2 different used seats from my stash,
so this time I put one together using some firmer foam and a custom seat cover.
At first I wasn't sure about the orange piping, but it's beginning to grow on me.
Here's a couple of pics of hanging out on the edge of a cliff from earlier today:

Re: 1981 GL1100 "Dual Sport"
Very nice! I wondered how the 80/20 tires would wear. I still haven't finished the bike I'm contemplating installing them on.

Re: 1981 GL1100 "Dual Sport"
My wife and I just got back from a really great ride yesterday.
We pretty much did a big loop around Wyoming.
6 1/2 days - 2440 miles.
The old bike did great, no issues at all.
GRAND TETONS ONLY 24 MILES OF DIRT ROADS THIS TRIP CHIEF JOSEPH HWY TOP OF BEARTOOTH PASS BIG HORN MOUNTAINS The bike got a lot more attention on this trip than it ever has before.
Mostly from Harley riders, all surprised to learn that this is a 44 year old Goldwing.

Awesome ride! I'm very curious how one (actually two!) can travel so light. Are the saddle bags magic? Where oh where does all your 'stuff' go?

Re: 1981 GL1100 "Dual Sport"
We carry everything that we need and somehow always manage to make it fit.
Since this was such a short trip, there was even a bit of "extra" room in the saddlebags.

We've been doing this for a long time and out of necessity, we have whittled down our "needs" to the LCD.
One saddlebag holds all of our required stuff:
.tool kit
.tire kit
.first aid kit
.Rain gear
.chaps
.jacket liners
.gloves
.etc...
The other saddlebag is for "other":
.ipad
.toiletries
.water bottles
.camera tripod
.Wife's junk (this time she brought along an extra pair of shoes so she didn't have to wear boots the whole time).
If mama ain't happy...
All of our clothing is in the tank bag strapped on the rack. (we only had to do laundry once on this trip)
If we do end up needing something, we'll buy it along the way.
It's surprising what you don't need to haul with you when the focus is on riding.

Re: 1981 GL1100 "Dual Sport"
Great to see one of these old GL1 machines in the back country!
How do your carbs do at near 10K elevation? Great shot of the Tetons.... that is a desktop quality pic!
Last Q: how many miles on your 81?
Edit - I rode across the top of WY with a group back in 2012.... most had GL1800s, we had a Honda ST1100. I'll never forget the ride along the Beartooth HWY, definitely a bucket list viewing of scenery. It also was darn cool up there even in August!

I love it. Only 24 miles of dirt road, a mere 1% of the ride. And the economy of gear says a whole lot. It looks like you're out for an afternoon ride.

We have definitely taken this bike places that most Goldwings will never see. The CV carbs do pretty good at all elevations.
Although the engine noticeably make less power because it has less oxygen the higher you go,
I'll just compensate by downshifting.
They say a NA engine loses 3% of it's horsepower for every 1000 ft. in elevation gain.
At 10,000 ft., The engine is down 30% on power.
There was 39K on the broken speedo when I got the bike back in 2018. I have put 49K on it since then,
so this bike has about 88,000 miles on it so far.
