1982 Honda Goldwing GL1100 Resto-Mod. Aka THING 2

This beautiful motorcycle is the result of almost 2 years of work, and was inspired by another identical build.

In 2021 I received a gift from my uncle. His precious, 1 owner 82’ GL1100. Lovingly referred to as “THING 1”. It hadn’t run for several years, but was able to be restored to excellent running order. I then modified it to reflect a more streamlined CB aesthetic, with great success, and I enjoy riding it to this day.

In 2022 I came across an add for a virtually identical GL1100, also from the original owner, with half the mileage of THING 1. I picked it up in Sept of 22’ and over the past several years, have lovingly recreated the build I did on Thing 1.

Thing 2, started as a non runner. It was repaired, then modified from its original configuration to the final product shown here. A loving resto-mod to alter it from the more bulbous, GL look to that of a CB inspired final design I had created once before.

Most of the items that made it look as it did originally, have been removed.

After lightening the bike I completed the below changes

Mechanical changes and upgrades include:

New Tubeless Dunlop D404F period correct matching tires - front and rear
New Brake pads
Rebuilt brake calipers front and rear
New Front Master Brake cylinder
Rebuilt Rear Master brake cylinder
Stainless Steel Brake lines throughout
GL1500 Ignition coils
New Ignition wires
Carburetors fully disassembled and rebuilt with Randakks rebuilding kit
Carbs sync’d by Robin Ray
New Fuel pump
New fuel filters (2)
New Fuel Lines
New Head Gaskets ( installation by Robin Ray of Decatur IN)
Valves clearances adjusted to spec
New Timing belt
New Fork seals
New fluids, coolant, final drive fluid, engine oil.
New Air, oil filters
New Battery w Tender lead attached
Air suspension checked and functions as new.

The OEM Faux Tank, side covers and exhaust pipes were in excellent condition and required minimal Polish to bring back to a beautiful shine.

The OEM Tool kit, air pump, and Air pressure gauge are included. The ignition key opens the tank compartment as it should.

This project was completed with the intention of providing the buyer with a custom, one of a kind, classic motorcycle. One that requires nothing except a clean safe space, and to be taken on long rides.

Starts immediately with just the slightest push of the starter button. With the completion of the head gasket, the engine now pulls like a freight train. But down in the low revs, is buttery smooth, and very comfy.

Final tuning and setup was completed by Robin Ray, a well known GL and Inline 4 UJM master mechanic. His work is reflected in the immediate start up behavior of this motor, and the incredible pull the engine has when you get heavy on the throttle.

A very conservative 22,8XX miles. There is decades of enjoyment to be had on this beautiful jewel of a bike.
