Hello from Alabama

#1

Post by tam6fp »

Greetings, all. I bought a 1982 GL1100 Interstate earlier this year and have enjoyed riding around northern AL. My goal for the bike is to covert to naked for most of my riding while retaining the ability to attach the bags when needed - which is what led me to NGW. Excited to browse the forums and learn.

Welcome from Wisconsin! The Interstate is actually pretty easy to get naked. The wiring for the saddle bags' directionals are sub-harnesses that plug in under the seat. Four bolts attach each side box, and frame comes apart into three large pieces and the small 'bumper' across the back. The luggage rack portion can be used by itself, too. I can lazily remove/ install the whole shebang in less than an hour...
The fairing is a bit more complicated, but again, all the wiring is added to the main harness, so you can basically just unplug it. Very little extra wiring work is needed, depending on your choice of headlight and directionals.
As a bonus, there's a great link on the ShopTalk page to downloadable color wiring diagrams for all years and models of the 1100's, as well as many useful tech tips!
Enjoy the ride!

Thank you. I'm hoping to start removal of the saddlebags/fairing in the next few weeks. At the moment I'm planning on trying to find lighting from a standard model to swap on.

Welcome to NGW. Rather than having to convert the bike back and forth I have two, one with a fairing and bags, the other with a window shield and bags. GL's are cheap if you watch the forsale boards and insurance is super cheap.
Come to the NGW Rally next September and meet all, ask questions and hear what the others have done.
Be safe
