Fork seal horror show
In other news, this -
- I don't think the seals have ever been changed. The retainer rings had completely rusted and disintegrated and each came out in about 8 pieces with the help of picks, the rest had just transmogrified into a rusty mush. As for the seals, I've removed a few of these things over the years but never ones as messed up as these - each was more of less welded to the inside of the slider. I had to laugh at the manual's suggestion of "prying them out", that wasn't going to happen in a month of Sundays. In the end I won ugly with a Dremel, 4 cut-off wheels and a flathead screwdriver. Some small nicks on the side of the tube afterwards but I think they'll be ok. Also had the wiper seals underneath which came out ok.
Couple of questions - is there a metal ring underneath the wiper seal that also needs to be removed/replaced? And does the All Balls replacement seal kit (or equivalent) do away with the wiper seal? Does the metal ring underneath the wiper seal need replacing or can the old one be re-used with the new seal?

Re: Fork seal horror show
I have a product called Shark Hide which I've used as a metal protectant before - wipe it on and that's pretty much it. It's a marine product, used to protect pontoons and the like from the elements. Good stuff

I have always found that removing fork seals is one huge PITA

Re: Fork seal horror show
The stupid mistake I made was driving in the previous seal dry.
Can't remove it so the simple solution was to use the extra fork leg I had
lying around (doesn't everybody?) Tried heat, special tools etc.
The seal in the spare leg came out with just a little bit of swearing.
This is the 3rd set of seals on this 79 Wing.
