I would personally just paint the tank to match the side panels....

I actually brought this up with the guy who's doing it. It wouldn't be a 100% match, and the cost of painting the panels is so small I wouldn't end up with any kind of discount anyway. So I'm basically out nothing if I do everything vs. just the tank.

Interesting that it couldn't be matched. I'd say all in then! :)

A lot of metal flake in those paint jobs. And the side panels would be faded some too. I'd paint everything.

I must confess that I forgot that they had metal flake in them...

If you can get everything painted for little money compared to just the tank, it does make it an easy decision.

There's a stupidly-deep metal flake on the tank as well. It's actually a very pretty color in an "obnoxious 70's ostentatious" kind of way. I almost feel bad for covering it up, but in the end it's not what this bike needs. It's been abused enough. lolol

It's been a while, but I managed to do some work on this bike, some good, some.... less so.

First off, the good. I took some time this winter to get a new seat cover to replace the old tattered one. This is when I found out that, in their infinite wisdom, Honda decided the best way to secure the old cover was to glue the chrome strip on to the bottom of the vinyl, then secure that to the seat pan via 8 or so large tabs. It works great when it was new. Less so when NO replacement seat cover now can include this strip.

Thankfully I was able to rivet some tack strips to the pan and finished the edge off with some chrome from from an auto parts store. It looks rather good.

Now the bad news. Of the original parts still on this bike, the sidecovers were included in that group. Mostly because unlike nearly everything else, they still looked really good. Dang near mint. Well, emphasis on "looked".

This is what happens when your mounting grommets are a bit too tight and you pop them off in the wrong order.

Hey, only an $85 fix!

But this also got me thinking. By the time I'm done, the only original part left on the bike will be the engine. There is a thought experiment called the Theseus Ship paradox. Basically, this guy Theseus had a ship, and would replace parts as they wore out. Eventually, after decades of ownership, he had replaced at least every bit of the ship at least once. The question is, was it still the same ship?

Now, I don't normally name my bikes, but "Theseus" does have a certain ring to it...

Ouch...that right there would've produced a few choice words from my mouth.

I think I said something once, then I just set the pieces aside, walked away, and didn't think about anything with two wheels for the rest of the day.

Well, new sidecovers have been ordered (Thanks for the link, Don!). Hopefully when they show up I can get a quote for a paint job and have one less thing to worry about.

If you don't do anything to it..... 30 years from now,
some "Pickers" will pay a premium for it because it has original paint.

In all honesty, after I pull the emblems I'll probably try my best to repair it and sell both as a set. The paint really is that good.

(Unfortunately, it seems the panel I broke is the same side EVERYONE breaks. Probably because you need to remove the left side to get at the fuse, while the right doesn't cover anything but an oil tank.)

I really love that color. Sucks that it broke.
