We'll be staying at the Johnathon Creek Inn http://www.jonathancreekinn.com/ in Maggie Valley, NC Thursday evening. Cyborg, Old Fogy and I will be heading (by I'm sure indirect routes) to the Deals Gap where we'll stay Friday night. http://www.dealsgap.com/motel.htm I'm contemplating riding to Leads, AL to take in the Barbers Motosports Museum Saturday. http://barbermuseum.org/index2.php I will probably take most of the day Saturday to ride to Leads as there are many fine roads to explore on the way and take in the museum Sunday and maybe start my ride back to the NC mountains either late Sunday or Monday. I don't have to get home to Raleigh before Tuesday evening. Cyborg & Old Fogy haven't solidified their plans for Saturday or Sunday as yet but they and anyone else is welcome to join me.

I live ~45 miles south of Leeds and would enjoy meeting y'all (especially ex-sailors/bubbleheads!) at Barber's. I'll keep looking here for schedule updates.

guys, I was borned and raised down there in that neck of the woods. There are tons of roads like that. The bad thing with deals gap is that the yankees who dont know how to ride the curves come down and will run you over. They got another run called moonshiners that might be good. I might do the deals gap then hit the moonshiners...

Well to get back on subject the 5th engines is doing very nicely. I got a couple hundred miles on it yesterday and drained the oil and it was very clean only a few small specs of friction material and zero metal. The bike runs good but there are a few tuning issues I am working on. Gotta do the valves this morning then touch up the points and hit the road for some more miles

I cannot begin to tell you how humbled I am that someone has had to go to these lengths in order to help me!

Like you, I hate to be beaten on anything, but having said that I seriously doubt that I could have found the impetus to keep on and on and on and........... changing engines, especially in that heat. So demoralising!

You have my undying admiration and gratitude

Most of us wouldn't have had the resources to keep going on and on and on like Steve did. But most of us would have kept going until we ran out of options just like Steve. Fortunately he had lots of options readily available. And hopefully he won't need any more options.

It seems like it would be only fair if this one runs!

It runs! Another 200 plus miles today and 55-80mph rolls on are very nice but 80-110 are even nicer

It rattles quite a bit above 4 k but it is holding together. No knocks or serious sounds but it does make some noises. She should be OK I hope. I did the last 20 miles or so on the freeway coming in from Suffolk and that was all 80 mph plus and it handled that very well.

I did Valves and timing again this morning. The timing was off just a hair from where I originally set it and only 2 valves needed tweaked and they were only out by a single thou so that is good. What I did find a bit disturbing is the black greasy/oil residue when I pulled the valve covers. I thought after a good flush that crap would be gone but it is not.

It is still damn HOT here. 96 when I got home a few minutes ago and the forecast for tomorrow is 99, then Monday is 99-103. But it is supposed to drop on Tuesday back to the high 80's and low 90's for the rest of the week. I think your body will go into shock there Old Fogey!!

That does sound like it should do the job. After a couple more oil changes hopefully the crud will be gone. Slight concern about the noises you mention.

Yea me too. It comes on like someone throwing a switch. No build up at all just on or off and loud enough that I can hear it at 60 mph. Almost seems like an harmonic and not a primary buzz if you understand my meaning. First thought would be a belt tensioner but I just put those on when I installed the engine a couple days ago and I checked them both and they were smooth as silk and quiet with no play.

I thought for a bit it might be the Tach gauge but I disconnected it and it is still there. Last night I pulled the Tach cable and soaked it in gear oil while I sprayed cleaner through the sheath. What noise that was from the cable is gone now.

I will investigate some more tomorrow.
