Got sidetracked for 2 days with other things I had to do, now I'm down with the intestinal bug. Maybe I'll be able to work on it some tomorrow. I sure hope so.

I mounted the speed sensor under the swingarm where it was easy to make and attach a bracket. I then super glued the magnet to the head of a disk bolt. This hides the unit. there are tow sides to the magnet, so be aware of that, and get it as close to the sensor as you can. THe tach wire simply plugs into the yellow coil wire. Mine came with a neutral indicator, so no help with that, sorry.

You must be able to calibrate yours, Sunnbobb. On this one, you send them the circumference of the front wheel and they set that before they send it to you. So the sensor has to be on the front wheel. It would be a lot easier if I could mount it elsewhere. I think the neutral light will be pretty easy. I'm still down with the intestinal bug, so no working in the shop for now. Too far from the toilet! 8-(

Why couldn't you send the diameter of rear wheel and mount it on rear?

Claude, that was an excellent suggestion! However, it's already done with the front. I thought for a second I might do that on the 76, but I have 3 different wheels for it, a 16", 17", and an 18", so wouldn't work on it.

Finally made some progress! I imagine you guys were wondering if I ever would. I got the neutral light working. It shows up as a red "P". Oh well, I can live with that. I did use the relay(Thanks for the suggestion Sagebrush!). I connected the original lines to the neutral light to the trigger side of the relay and ground and the Green/Yellow wire to the NO(terminals 87 and 30). It didn't work at first. So, I had to remove the tranny cover and reposition the neutral light switch. It was off just a bit. Tomorrow, I will get oil and antifreeze back in the bike and hopefully find out if the tach works.

Here are some pics of the installation so far.

This pic shows the wiring mess. The relay you can see is for the neutral light. The 9 pin connector just below the relay is the connector that the original dash plugged into. I have a mating connector on it to patch across to the new unit. The white 9 pin connector to the right is the connector on the end of the new unit's wiring harness. It is a perfect match for the original 9 pin connector for the original dashboard. I was lucky enough to find a couple matching 9 pin connectors at a junk shop down the street. It sure made things easier. The wire colors don't match, but it isn't hard to figure out what is going where.

I ordered a magnetized bolt to use for the speedo sensor. Hopefully it will be here Monday. That's the part that will be the hardest of the whole project I think.

So, you can consider the "P" light as in Pneutral as the "P" in pnumatic is silent.

I'm happy to have read of your success. I was beginning to wonder for awhile.

Well, no progress today. I had some things needing done before working on the bike. When I got done with that, there were 2 friends rolled by on their bikes. Guess what? I went for a nice 160 mile ride down to Salina, OK and back using different roads both ways. It sure was nice to get out and ride. Depending on how my co-worker is doing, I'll be home tomorrow and get some work on it done then. If the co-worker is sick, I'll be at work covering for him. But, I should be off Tue and Wed if I work tomorrow. I only work 2 days a week normally. Right now I'm also doing laundry. I'm about out of everything.

Glad to hear you are figuring it out and have some of it working. I seen them on ebay also for a reasonable price, but was concerned about they being a knock-off. Appears unfounded fears.

Some really good news today! The tach works great! The temp sensor works great also! The only thing left is the speedometer. I have the magnetic bolts now, so I'll be working on it shortly. Just had to let you all know the good news about the tach and temp sensor.

Ok, I now have a speedometer! I made the bracket for the sensor, mounted the magnetized bolt and it works. At least it works up to about 6 mph. That's what I got out of it spinning the front wheel.





Friday, I'll get the rest of the bike put back together and take it for a ride. My next project is to install a Rostra cruise control. I won't be able to work on it tomorrow, Wed, and Thur. I work tomorrow, and immediately after work I'm going to Rogers, AR to dog sit/house sit for my brother while he gets some medical stuff done in Little Rock. Then I work again Thursday.

If anyone has any questions on this setup feel free to ask. It was easier than I originally thought it would be.

Here are the results I see after about 60 miles of riding. It was a very bright day, and the turn signal lights are very dim. You have to look close to see if they're flashing or not. The other indicators are ok, not real big but noticeable. When riding into the sun it's hard to read the speedo, but that's to be expected. The tach reads a bit lower than the mechanical tach did. I don't know which is right. At 60 mph, it's reading about 3200 rpm. The speedo is about 5% high, but that could be my measurement of the circumference of the front tire. The temp gage seems to be working fine, but the gas gage hasn't moved at all yet, so don't know how that's going to work out. The speedo was checked with my street pilot gps. The odo and trip meter seem to work fine. I'm still not sure how to reset the trip meter. I'm thinking some kind of shade will help on the readability. That's what I use on the gps, and it helps a lot. I might try tilting the unit up some more and rigging the shade for the mechanical gages to shield this unit. I will probably keep this unit as I'm tired of replacing speedos and tachs. I hope the gas gage proves out to be at least somewhat useful. Whether I will get another for the 76 remains to be seen or not.
