Looks like the bike had been put away with a blown head gasket. I have a second GL1200 that is an Aspencade. It has 9600 miles on it. I plan on swapping in that motor since it cannot be registered. Are there any differences between the motor in the Aspencade and the Interstate? None that I know of. Can the motor be pulled without removing the carbs? Yes, but be cautious. Less chance of damage to the carbs if you remove them.

I have no idea what year the Aspencade is. There is no VIN on the frame to figure it out. There is only a label from Honda with a control number and what looks like a VIN. Which digit of the VIN would tell me the year?

It doesn’t really matter which year it is, as a 85-87 will go into the 84 frame. I am sure there are a couple differences, but one noticeable one is the electronics for the engine on the 84 is on the back of the engine, and the 85-87 are on the front.

that is true, the engine fits. As mentioned, you would need to make wiring changes. The pulsars are in the back of an 84 engine, and off the main crank for the timing belts (front) of the later engines. I believe that starters are different as well

Yes, the 84 starter is unique to the 84.

Looks like the Aspencade is an 84. I guess I got lucky. Now I just have to make sure that the Aspencade motor is usable. No sense in pulling it if it is shot too.
