I would think it highly unusual that a chunk of casing like that would randomly find its way into an engine. I know it's not a pleasant thought, but it likely originated in there.

I wander if that is a piece of the piston skirt. I had a slightly bent rod on a inline 4that caused the skirt to touch the crank on the down stroke. Made lots of noise for a short while.
