That is one nasty looking cylinder! That a real shame to put so much work in to an engine and still not know the disposition!

Best of luck with this!

Yup,

But when I was in college I built VW engines (and others) out of blown up engines I picked up from the local dealerships and machine shops.
When you are low on cash you can built an engine with one weak cyl and another turns up at a good deal later. I've seen a number that were stained to crap that broke in, then some didn't. WF had the feds buying parts for him so I suspect he hasn't had to run as much trash. If you look into many frozen engines that's what you see and if folks don't look in that's what they may be happily running.

Thanks for the encouragement Cookie... seriously! Unfortunately I will need more than just head gaskets... little things like the oiler o-rings, valve seals, cam seals were shot on the heads. I'll have to see what all is included but maybe just a top end kit?
and then comes the carbs, brake calipers / master cyl kits frt and rear, and thats just the start... who knows what the clutch plates are like and then the wiring mess.
I LOVE IT!

But all that stuff is reusable if this block does not work out. To test I'd probably even use old hoses.

I had an engine similar to that in the #2 jug. Had it honed but did not oversize the piston. worked out OK.

Sweet! Things are looking up... with the shot of confindence from these replys and armed with my occaisional ability to fall into a pile of s**t and come out smelling like a rose, I am again optomistic.... Kinda.
But I now have a back up plan. Sunday I am going on a road trip!
Parting out or will sell whole a GL1100 Gold Wing 1981. I also have two engines plus 77-79 GL1000 engine. Two complete wiring harnesses, tires, rims and many extra odds and ends.
Any advise you all can give before I get this one is appreciated

Well, Haven't updated this thread in a while... Last week I got home with all that Goldwing stuff the guy had, ingluding a 1100 Aspencade, another 1100 enine, wireing harnesses, a 1000 engine and set of carbs, a '81 bare frame and several boxes of parts. Still missing a seat and a Headlight. :-?
I have spent the week sorting parts, checking things out. The Aspencade has an exact duplicate #2 cylinder full of water #@$%*!!! But the spare engine had the heads off and looks good, a little cleaning with scotchbite and it turns over easy (whew). I worked a deal with Robin1731, and Saturday He came and bought the 1000 / early carbs. SUPER guy, we literally talked for 2 1/2 hours but turned out when he got it home the engine wasn't a gem. Hopefully the carb set and what he can salvage off the engine is worth what he paid for all though... thought I was sharing the wealth.
Today was down to business... got the old engine out of the original Standard (still working on a name for her... thinking "Spare Change"). Figured since I was this far, might as well jump in with both feet. Got her down to a bare frame. took so many pics during the disassemble process the battery is now dead on the camera!
I will get them uploaded on the host in the morning and see if I can get some posted tomorrow. Maybe with all the other parts I can get a SECOND one up and running next, but first things first.
Been a long day and I'm whooped.

Yeah, it was in pretty rough shape. Looks like it blew a head gasket and they kept riding it for awhile like that. The rear cover has been off before, it had rtv on it. I did get it to turn over after cleaning the cylinders. Hoosierdaddy is cool. He had no idea what this motor was. I got the carbs too so I should be good. No problem here ;) .

Look close between the cylinders. See the erosion?

I'm not an experienced engine builder, but I know a lost cause when I see one.

Given the relatively low cost of a replacement motor, I'd say part that one out.

 Holy crap! I seem to be a junk engine magnet! Maybe I ought to go into the boat anchor business.

As promised… a picture is worth a thousand words, but you guys already heard the story before. This is just my version of the same old yarn.

Oh yeah, this is a parts motor only. I just wonder how long they rode it to get it that bad. Looks like most of the internal parts are ok. Except the rings. The carbs alone the are worth what I paid for the whole package so all is kewl. ;)

Too bad you weren't next door. I think I may have just lucked out on a 1000 motor. If they loosen right up in a day a think they may not be too bad.

Being the Maintenance Supervisor in a factory has it’s advantages at times (seldom). We mold plastic parts and several get painted… Jeeze, we even paint black plastic black! But anyway, we have 5 paint lines, 3 are chain conveyors that have automation (robots) to spray the pattern of the part, one small paint booth for hand spraying small parts and then placing them on a belt conveyor that runs under an IR heated hood. And then THIS!
