you can substitute a grease gun for the master cylinder. The bleed screw acts as a zerk, put a bolt to block the brake line inlet, and pump away. This is even more messy!
I've used both the MC and grease gun methods. On bikes that I've rescued from fence rows, the grease gun is more efficient since the entire caliper will need cleaned thoroughly anyway, and grease is certsinly no harder to remove than hardened brake fluid.

The pic below shows how I use an old GL1000 master cylinder for pumping pistons that aren't badly stuck out of calipers (I also save used brake fluid for use in it instead of wasting good, new fluid)

I also have a short banjo bolt that I drilled out through the head and installed a zerk fitting so I can use a grease gun when the master cylinder won't move the pistons and a set of internal pipe wrenches for turning really stuck pistons to get them moving.
