I'm guessing with the engine off, pretty much all noise goes away...

So, this doesn't narrow it down very much. Best thing to do is to start a new thread for undivided attention. Meanwhile, what does it do with the engine running and the clutch disengaged (pulled in)? Or in neutral and coasting? Then we can start zeroing in on what to consider.

My 78 has a bearing sound, like a dry bicycle bearing spinning. Mine is related to engine rpm not shaft or wheel rpm. If I pull in the clutch and shut off the engine it goes away. It went 2,200 miles last week so it must not be serious, it seems louder in the mountains probably due to hotter and thinner oil. I call it a shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh sound.

Sounds like you may have a belt or belt tensioner problem. You need to pinpoint where on the engine the noise is coming from. You can use a long screwdriver as a makeshift stethoscope.

Try lubricating your Tach cable. They can make a surprising amount of noise when dry.
