I hear ya on the spoke tension. I re-spoked both rims on my 75 and never had any problems. I re-spoked another wheel down to a 16" rim and did not keep a check on the spokes. Went for a ride one day and it felt squirrelly. Got it home and found 9 broken spokes.

New front tire on, gas tank in, rear end assembled......except I'm going to have to disassemble the rear wheel....I have no good way to make the rusty rear spokes look reasonable without taking the whole wheel apart and sandblasting spokes. Anyone have an alternate way to make rusty spokes look reasonable?

Not if you want a stock look. But if you are going to that trouble, why not replace the spokes with new http://www.buchananspokes.com Stainless Steel. If you blast your stock spokes that already lost their rust preventing coating, they are sure to rust even faster. If you can tolerate a near stock look, you can follow the lead of

but go with a less contrasting color like silver when you paint. Depends on your budget and desires.

Yeah, Buchanan re-threaded my front spokes when I changed the rim and they're painted. I guess I'll paint the rears too....groan. Thks for the feedback.

Yep, back rim spoked on front hub with shortened spokes. Hope it works

Well, it certainly will look great. What about ride height, seems like that will decrease the steering rake a bit, have others posted what that means?

OD of front tire is essentially same as stock front tire. Ride height same. The biggest difference is front tire contact patch is now larger. What effect that has on handling remains to be seen. I can guarantee I won't be doing any knee dragging in this old girl : )

Good point, does not seem like a 17 could be as tall as a 19, but your are correct that a wide 17 can be almost as tall as a stock skinny 19. So no big deal.

I'm enjoying the updates and pictures of your project bike. BTW, your old seat looks nice on my '79. I still need to do some work to get her on the road though.

Rusty spokes...you can try that silver polish, the kind that comes in a blue can with the cotton wadding inside, I forget what it's called, but you can get it at Cdn Tire in housewares....and there's also a polishing tape you can buy which is fabric strips impregnated with a dry cleaning powder...it's all a bit labour intensive, but is probably worth a shot. Me, I'm a big fan of 0000 Steel Wool.
