That's going to be really interesting. did you ever see that wing they built for the Isle of Man? The guy actually tipped the motor up in the front to gain cornering clearance.

I've been going all over the place with the swingarm, and it's still just tacked in place, but in the interest of just seeing if it works I'm thinking that I'll weld it in place this weekend and be done with it, then I can start work on the side panel gas tanks.

In theory. I might be able to get away with not doing anything to the swingarm and just mounting the shock right to the front of it. It looks as though the same swingarm was used on the GL500, and there was one model that used a linked mono-shock with no other external swingarm bracing. Granted, a GL500 is not a goldwing, but this a very stripped down wing with no potential passenger weight, so I feel like anything I do to beef up the swing arm will be plenty.
Does anyone have a silver and gold wing to compare? I really think the swingarm is the same.

Toyed with the idea, but I'm not ashamed to admit that I like how the bike looks with the engine level. Especially with the carbs sitting out there.

This is more of an adventure bike build than a GT build in my head anyway, kind of a cafe racer meets a BMW GS and has a big fat ugly baby.
I'm a big time lurker over on ADVrider, so this is my version of a poor-mans beemer.

Oh, and I played a bit more with the carb links before I came in tonight, after tightening everything up and setting up a spare throttle on a bar, they aren't actually as bad as I thought they were going to be.

A bit heavy, and a bit to sensitive, but closer than I thought, right now I plan to make slightly longer cams to mount on the carb part itself for a bit more leverage and a bit less action and that might be enough.

KMR, thanks for posting some serious fab. Keep rocking on that linkage until it's how you like it. The welds on the mono are pro.

Thanks, have you made any progress on your links? Would like to see what you are coming up with, although I notice from the pictures that your carbs will face the other way (I mounted mine so the adjusters were on the outside where I could get to them) and I don't think yours will be at an angle to each other, so things will be a bit different.
I think the same system could work if you mounted a small pillow block style bearing to the bottom of the frame rails instead of on the carbs like I'm doing.


On a side note, do any of you guys know if a GL1000 rear hub will fit on the GL1100?
Tire choices for a 16" wheels are disappointing, I might like to lace a 17" rim on a wire hub down the line.

if you are referring to the drive hub in the final drive the 1000 has 6 studs and the 1100 has 5. JB

Well that's a good, or bad, start I guess. Will the 1000 drive hub fit the splines of the 1100 final drive though?
Not as though it's very pressing, I've got plenty of other things to take care of first.

Mostly finished up the swingarm.


The head tube chop went great.


Had some fun with a junk propane tank:










Also worked on a buck for the right side gas tank.


The motor shrugged off the frame.


So I punished the motor.

That there is the perfect example of some form of insanity.
The only reason It's opened up is because I wanted to see how it worked.
And I don't regret doing it.

just a suggestion here. Ive seen a few pictures on this site with the engine upside down and sideways. Ive split a few cases on these things and a few have had quite a bit of sludge in the bottom of the cases that will slowly creep to other places. You may consider a flush of diesel fuel or something when you reinstall it before you start it up. This is My opinion only. You can check the oil pickup screen also whille out. On the rear hub if I remember correctly the spline count and diameter is differant between the 1000 and 1100. interesting build. Thanks for sharing. JB

Thanks jbz, that's part of the reason I've got it flipped up the way I do, the filter and drain plug are out and I'm trying to drain as much as possible into that little can below.
I've also read that running the engine (just at idle) with a blend of ATF and oil can help flush all that out.

Ah, good eye!
I didn't like the stock chrome cover on there so I made that little ring and bolt plate instead. Theres nothing in there being as it's an 1100.
It's not finished yet, think I'll make a matching one for the other side, will be a bit different since the cam extends out in that one, but I like the look.
