Very cool story. Probably not the last. International cooperation.

You are welcome Mike! Today was great!... the best day for sure since my surgury. It was lovely to watch you two vetran wrenchers doing what you love, and working together like... well like family. Truly heartwarming. The throaty growels of the sportster mufflers sounding smooth as a VTwin never delivered was icing on the cake. 'can't wait for the re-peat.

It would be great to know what was wrong about those 1976 carbs. I have a set open currently getting cleaned and then assembled. Any mistake you can make, I can mistake better.

Good Evening Folks;
I always say the proof is in the parts. This morning Brother in Law Tim went to the local Auto Zone and bought a new AGM battery for the beast. Then he went for a short ride. He said the bike has never run so well. Easy trip home for us too !
Thanks again Gary.

Lovely! I am looking forward to some cruisin' time together in the months to come
I haven't started in on these carbs - the meds don't leave much "awake time" and that's all taken up with PT but better days are around the corner. Thanks again for a super pick-me-up day. Life is good!

I reviewed the Randakk video and have been discussing with him issues around felts. He reiterates that felt replacement is beyond the scope and skill of most carb overhauls, but that there are felt sets available if things get that dire. With that 11th hour solution available in the background, I ordered a master rebuild set for your carbs. I propose to do the deep cleaning (boiled or ultrasonic depending on whether my cleaner crosses back over the Styx), re-do the seals and floats, and test it on my '77. If all is well, we can schedule a repeat Saturday for whenever you are back in town, and if it's the felts, I can do the diagnostic tests in situ, and we can discuss it from there.
I think it's highly likely the local shop didn't do the deep cleaning that these carbs need in order to get to the idle passages, and whether they did naughty things to the felts or not, cruddy idle passages would cause what you are seeing.
So the parts are on the way and I have found my silver grease, some new transistors, and the soldering iron... maybe the Ultrasonic Cleaner won't be dining room art much longer

It lives! I don't know if it will live for 2 minutes or for the 5 carbs that are stacked up and waiting, but yours will be on the table this afternoon.

Moved the patient onto the operating table.

I'm doing an initial assessment but I don't have the air cutoff valve in the bin... did it stay in the barn or did it follow you home?

The buttons look good but the screws are in bad shape
CarbSwap12.jpg
the hoses and clamps look questionable... I will vacuum test them, but will look up replacement too

Generally speaking, I don't see evidence of the carbset having been dipped and soaked in cleaner, which is good news for the felts

One of the chrome rails looks good, but the other has some pitting that warrants attention

I don't know if I can brushplate nickel in these holes (probably not)

I'm only good for a few minutes at-a-time at the table, but every day is better (or at least every week is better) than the last

Knock away! I am all ears.
I see the turned-up horns which is how Randakk does it; I haven't pulled a set of carbs since reading this discussion elsewhere in the forum, so I haven't tried removing rather than turning myself as a technique. I do have to defend the wrencher here noting that the clamps are fully and completely loosened.
Other than that, taking off the chrome rails isn't my first choice but these will have some attention to pretty-up the chrome and will be re-attached before taking the carbs off the plenum.
What else?

The turned up intakes is what I'm talking about. Look through Pistol Petes guru thread. On the carbs there is a tab that sort of locks the rubber in place. If you turn the intakes that tab eats the rubber. I know Randakk has shown this. But it isn't good for the rubber boots.
Look here.
