Stayed in Durango 3 or 4 years ago. It's a busy, touristy town, not like when I rode through in 1973. Dolores is a small, unbusy place and I'd prefer it over Durango easily. It has a decent restaurant, gas stations and a hardware store and not too many people.

now the question for me will be which set of two wheels? I am getting the LTD back together, plan on taking the 78 apart (carbs need doing), not sure I trust the 79, way too far to go on the GL500 (well maybe I am too old to go that far on it).... decisions... decisions....

I agree with Terry about Dolores being a lot less crowded than Durango. But, Durango to me seems just a little more conveniently located as far as a staging area for local rides. Dolores is a little bit off the beaten path. You're getting down into the flats by the time you hit Dolores.

And for sure there is a broader choice for dining and accommodations both motels and camping in the Durango area. I would sure be up for a run to Colorado!

I may have missed it somewhere in this thread... are the dates for Deadwood firm? I'm asking as my new employer likes us to submit all vacation requests as soon after the new year as possible.

These Dates are Firm. Location is not a lock just yet. Apparently Wild Bills is under new ownership and we have yet to make contact but that is our Primary.

Anybody in SoCal/Arizona/Vegas interested in a Winter run to Lake Havasu? Nice destination, good eats, the Lake, The Colorado River, the London Bridge, a Wildlife Refuge, a nice run down the river past (or into) the Parker Dam.

Camping is to be had, but given that it would be "Winter", I'd probably opt for a motel. They're cheap this time of year. I'd recommend January (43F@night - 65F@day) or February (46F@night - 70@day) before Spring Break kicks in beginning in March.

If there's enough interest, I'll dig into specifics.

Remember you don't have to pack for any more than about 3 to 5 days. There are clothes washing machines everywhere!

I've been to Deadwood the week of Sturgis Ralley and the week before. Motels are a LOT cheaper when the Ralley is not going on.

Deadwood is right in the middle of all kinds of stuff to see. Also plan to go to Devils Tower in Wyoming. Only about an hour ride from Sturgis/Spearfish and add another 20 minutes if from Deadwood.

All within easy day riding from Deadwood: Mount Rushmore, Needles Highway, Pigs tail, Crazy Horse and countless Museums and memorials. The road from Sturgis to Deadwood is an awesome ride. Alt 14 from I-90 (Sturgis exit) to Deadwood, the first casino on the right has the best breakfast buffet you've ever seen and it's cheap!

you are right about the motels and campgrounds being cheaper... and you do not need to rub elbows with 500,000 of your best friends!

You just throw the clothes in. Drive 150 yards and wait for them.
