Re: GL1000 1976 - Head gasket
Hi guys,
I guess Im almost done with cleaning everything prior to reassembling all of it.
In fact, the more I get close to it the more I slow down. I have to admit I get kind of anxious to make mistakes when mounting it all back...
Today, I lapped the valves very gently. I noticed that exhaust valve n°3's stem was clearly coated with some kind of limestone and looks heavier than the others. It could confirm the trouble with the gasket this side...
What would you suggest to remove this coating ? Can I safely put it in an acid solution like vinegar or some phosphoric acid ?

Re: GL1000 1976 - Head gasket
I've seen many videos showing guys cleaning their valves with drill and scotchbrite red. Wouldn't it be too agrssive for our coated valves ?

Put on leather gloves and work on the carbon deposit with a wire wheel.
Work determined to remove the deposits, not just burnish the accumulated deposits.

Re: GL1000 1976 - Head gasket
I believe that the only place they are coated is on the seating area. As long as the deposit is not flaking off or in the area of the guide, I'd leave it.
BTW, the pitting on the sealing face of #1 seems pretty extensive. I'd consider a new replacement if compression is in doubt. Last I bought them (a few years ago), exhaust were ~$20-25 each on partsnmore.

Re: GL1000 1976 - Head gasket
Today partsnmore sells the exhaust valve for 22$. Honda sells it for almost 80. How can partsnmore be OEM ? Even if not OEM, do they worth it ?

Re: GL1000 1976 - Head gasket
Hi guys,
I'm mounting back everything after cleaning and surfacing the heads.
In order to change the seals on the camshaft, I removed this screw for the ignition system on the left cam : I can't find the torque for screwing it back...
Do one of you know it ?
Thanx in advance !

If it is not in the book then I apply standard torques based on the size of the bolt shaft. here https://ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php ... 56#p453196

Thank you Whiskerfish, I couldn't find it so I made it 10Nm as it's a 6mm bolt nut.Whiskerfish wrote: ↑Sun Aug 07, 2022 10:53 am If it is not in the book then I apply standard torques based on the size of the bolt shaft. here https://ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php ... 56#p453196

After reading the advancer assembly was removed from this camshaft to replace the adjacent oil seal assy. , I need to know the round pin in the shoulder of the camshaft that the notch on the back of the advancer assy indexes with was still in its assigned place. If that round pin has been dislodged and not noticed as missing, the advancer assembly will spin freely on the camshaft stub.

Hi Cliff,
I noticed this round pin and left it in place when removing the advancer assembly (the cam was vertically clamped on the vice).
I checked also that the pin took its place in that notch when reaasembling it !
But I did made some mistakes already...forgot to install back the dowels and pulley seals and had to assembly twice the cams on the heads .
A real poor english translation for one of my french favorite expression: it's being a fly that you become a flyer
