Every year I end up taking my center stand apart to clean and lube it. This will end that I hope. First remove you center stand from bike. You will notice rusted pin inside of stand has it too.

Image

Take stand and mark spots to drill you must do this on part of stand that faces muffler. If you do it on wrong side you will wipe out grease fitting's the first time you use stand.

Image

Now set up drill with a 13/64 drill bit and drill 2 holes (I installed 2 fittings)

Image

Next step take a 1/4-28 tap and tap threads in both holes.

Image

Install fittings so they face outside of bike this makes it easy to lube. These are 1/4 fittings.

Image

Next take the pin and clean it up. A wire wheel on grinder works great for this. When its clean take a marker and draw lines on it like a barber pole. Start in center and work way out.

Image

Take pin to grinder and grind along marks not to deep. I do this to make grease flow better. (Old machinist trick) It stops whats called hydrulic action.

Image.

Now you are ready to put it back in bike. You might want to take the time to paint it so it looks pretty when you get it back on.

Great info.

Just one thing: They're called zerk fittings. I think someone once told me they were invented by someone named Zerk.

The manual says to remove the left muffler in order to remove the center stand. Is that so? What is the procedure to remove the stand?

I don't have stock mufflers but I think it would have to come off. Theres a small bolt you have to take out then you drive the shaft out. I used a wood dowel. Make sure you note how spring is hooked up. I think that all there is to it. Oh you have to jack bike up too.

Yes the standard exhaust (all 18 lbs of it) must be removed firstly, in order that the centre stand shaft can be drifted out. Loosen the two pinch bolts and remove the split pin first. In the UK we call them 'grease nipples' and I bought a small pack of M6 grease nipples, and drilled and tapped two appropriate holes for them. Because the threads did prevent the shaft passing through the holes, I needed to add a couple of tiny washers to each of the nipples. Once the centre stand and the spring is correctly in place, and that took some head scratching, the bike must then be put back onto it's centre stand before the silencer can be replaced.
