Hi,

I recently picked up a 1976 GL1000.

It was tucked away in someone's barn with a bunch of other neglected bikes from the '70s. No title, missing the headlight, seat, left side cover and a few other bits, but it was relatively clean, engine rolled over with at least some compression, oil and coolant were full and looked good. So for $100.00 I couldn't turn it down.

Since then I have got the title and I believe all of the stock parts that I will need to put it back together. The first stage will be basically stock so I can get a good feel for how the bike was intended to be. I'm not going for a correct restoration as I am more inclined to do a mild cafe or a bobber.

New points have been installed and the high tension leads repaired so I have spark and timing. The carburetors, petcock and fuel pump have been cleaned.

The gas tank is currently soaking in vinegar.

That is where it is sitting now. I want to clean the motor and the frame while it is disassembled, but it is a bit too cold out there right now. Since I have some time I think I'll pull the final drive for cleaning and inspection and clean the front and rear brake systems.

Normally I get the bikes running first to make sure that there are no motor issues, but this one is clean enough that if there are motor issues I will just have to deal with them.

I have been through there and there are good topics in there. I especially like the ones that are specific to gold wings like the timing belts.

I have had really good luck bring back the Honda CB/CL350s and 360s (even with a locked up motor) and a couple CB500 Fours, but these GLs are a bit more involved. They are a bit more like cars with fuel pumps and radiators :)

That's what I said. I am usually reluctant to put any money at all into a bike before I know it will run, but this one has some wiggle room.

Alright. It looks like it is working. Here is the bike when I first got it.

I never had to remove the rear wheel to get a gas tank out before :shock:

And last night when I started soaking the gas tank with vinegar.

I picked up the seat, rear fender, pegs and headlight from a long time local GL rider. They cost me as much as the bike, but that really isn't that bad.

That's it to this point. The vinegar is doing a pretty good job. I've never tried that before so we'll see how it turns out. :-D

At the beginning of the Carb pics there is a cup of Coffee on the table and at the end there is a half a bottle of beer

I'm surprised nobody has said this, but be sure to replace the timing belts before you fire up the engine. :-D
