Watch the speedometer real close when you hear the noise. The one on my blue 1100 can get real buzzy and make quite a bit of noise then suddenly quit. If you look at the needle when its doing its thing it just vibrates but doesn't move much. Put your hand on it. If its the culprit you should be able to feel the vibration.

No definitely not the speedo. I can get it in any gear passing through 4,000 rpm.

I've had speedos do that, but if it did not do it with the other engine why now? Easy to test though.
Just to cheer you up I just made a bit of a fool of myself, glad nobody saw me. I've read you can balance a nickle on the seat of an idling wing and coming back from a ride she was so smooth I thought I'd try it. I leveled the bike in the yard and spent five minutes trying to balance the &*^%in' nickle. Every time I got it to stand up the wind blew it over before I could start the bike. Somebody with more patience than me will be needed to make that test, maybe in an area with less wind.

If you put a good CW soundtrack with this I bet it would sell a million copies. :-)

I don't think I can balance a nickle on my desk ....

My mind is already in shock over the temps. Body will swiftly follow I reckon. Those are the sort of oven temperature we cook at, not ride bikes in helmets and armoured gear!

The bike's sounding like it's just about there! But I guess it will not be the only thing making strange moaning sounds!

I have balanced a nickel on the valve covers many times to show people.

This engine really sounds sweet up to about 4 grand and it does not seem to do it in the shop. I think it has something to do with engine loading. I am cooling off from cutting the grass, maybe in a hour or two I will sneak out for a quick ride. Damn Hot out though.

If I asked you to ram your hand onto a grinding wheel, you'd think I was mad. That's effectively what the road surface becomes when you come off. My hands, kneecaps, hip joints, elbows etc have served me very well in the shape they were made. I very much doubt that customising them by grinding lumps off will enhance them in any way whatsoever.

Strangely enough, many folk must agree with me judging by the amount of armoured gear there is on the market.

Maybe that was my nickle problem, I was trying the seat.
If you pull off the cables from speedo and tach you'll know it ain't them.
The only other whine I ever go was when I got my first belt too tight. Slackened that off and no more high speed whine.
