GL1100 drive shaft lengths

#1

Post by Old Fogey »

I know that the early and late 1100s had different drive shaft lengths, the later most likely the longer.

I have a real good 1100 shaft here, but as I don't know what length either of them are, I don't know which shaft I've got!
Could some kind soul help me out? I need one measurement from a known year shaft, say from top to bottom.

Don't have one totally out, but an '83 measures appox 16.5" (41.9 cm) from the front of the shaft to the end of the rear splined joint. Didn't have snap ring pliers handy to remove the rear C-clip.
Have a '80, but it's still in the bike.

Seems like everything on the outside measures the same.

But, different part #'s on the shaft and splined jount.
Great to keep these old 'Wings flying on down the road.

Did notice one difference on the swingarm.
The early one was sleeved and plug welded at the rear, '83 is not (held in the foreground in the pic).

Thanks for looking. I knew that the two different combinations were approximately the same length, but that still leaves the question of the shaft lengths, unless you could measure up the attached coupler to the end of the shaft and subtract that from the total length for me?

Also, if this helps, the '83 has the number 5 cast into the front end where the '80 has what looks like a 2.

...isn't he asking just of the two available 1100 length differences; long and short?

On to what we really want to know. Is this an attempt to get a replacement shaft going? (Ujoint)
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Yes, he is!

No, he's not!

That is a project that has stalled through lack of focus. One day.............

It's just that I have got in a very good 1100 shaft which I needed to know about so that I could sell it.

Anyone need this shaft for their late 1100? Make me a reasonable offer. Perfect U/J, excellent splines at both ends.
