Speeduino efi 1981 gl1100

Check these guys out if your looking for a challenging project. I'm partway through converting the gl1100 to efi using a built at home speeduino ecu and a honda cbf1000 throttle bodies ($40 ebai). It could look like a piece of piss when it's done, but it's been a fun challenge through the winter months. Pictures will be posted shortly.

I was wondering if anyone would ever try this. Those ARM processor boards are very versatile. I will be watching this with interest.

So far i have bench tested the board with the injectors. They seem to work fine. Next step will be to get the battery and electrics hooked back up on the bike to set timing and test if the coil trigger unit is going to play nice with the stock coils. after that its intake manifold build, plumbing fuel pump and setting up throttle body linkage for the left and right throttle body sets.

got the bosch 211 off amazon for $11. found this picture and information for the unit over here.http://www.useasydocs.com/Bosch_211.htm

Wired up main power and injector twelve volt to the accessory 5 amp screw terminals in the bike. Also wired Tps, hall sensor, IAT, CLT, injectors, ignition trigger (2 channel wasted spark with original coils, using clone bosch 211 trigger found dwell specs online and setup in tuner studio), also bluetooth is wired. it is its own adventure learning how to use and arduino as a passthrough to program the hc-06 bluetooth with a custom name and password, not to mention getting msDroid app to work with your speeduino. Msdroid allows you to use your android phone as your speedometer using your phone gps, plus all sensor info from the board can be displayed on gauges. Battery voltage, throttle position, temperatures, too many options to list can be displayed as you drive. I still have idle control, spartan 2 o2 controler, fuel pump and relays to wire and map hose to plumb. Also need to get cracking on the intake manifolds and throttle linkage. Will also need to remap the inlet air temp sensor and coolant temp sensor (lost the values for one sensor and bought a new generic sensor for the other). So far, sparks come out the spark plugs and the injector happily tap away when I crank the starter. But I still need intake manifolds the fuel plumbing and to set the exact timing. Timing is in the ballpark I think, but a may need a machinist to make me a timing wheel if things aren't accurate enough.

This is it with just power and ground hooked up to the accessory screw terminals in the fuse box. Only the five wires for idle control and fuel pump control remain to be hooked up. The ecu enclosure doesn't have a tray yet. But there will be plenty of space to work with when the throttle body's are mounted outside the false tank.

Kinda makes the ole carb rack look pretty simple. I admire the engineering effort it takes (and will take) to make this happen, though. The thing about EFI, once it's dialed in, you just ride and forget about it.RAT wrote:My head hurts ....

Some msdroid screens. Can be as complex or simple as you make it.

Mocking up intake tubes with pvc conduit.
Plan on getting in some aluminum pipe and trying to braze the intake tubes together for a sturdy permanent setup. Also if the brazing works i will have a product that can be polished. Shiny.

Re: Speeduino efi 1981 gl1100
Electrical is mostly done. Power supply for ecu, injectors, and o2 controller are coming from accessories fuse. New connections are soldered into bottom side of original fuse box. Parking lights circuit is cut out and jumped to ignition power to make an extra fuse available. The new "parking" fuse is 3 amps for direct ecu switching of the fuel pump relay. When ignition is turned on the ecu will prime the pump for a predetermined number of seconds. After priming the pump the ecu will turn the pump off until the engine is rotating.

I've toyed with the idea of injection on my '77,but this is way beyond my pathetic electrical ability. I am both fascinated and scared poopless by your project, and will remain on the edge of my seat for the end result!

what digschooper said except my pathetic electrical ability would make him look like an electrical engineer.

Re: Speeduino efi 1981 gl1100
quick update. got bike running sunday morning. tried to start saturday night but after several fireballs out the exhaust and blowing up the makeshift intake pipes, retired to the house to rework cam trigger angle. my math was way off. so sunday with the new math the bike was at an idle. spark plugs are sooted up pretty bad from way too high injector flow, plus running too low values on afr table. dropped fuel map numbers by half. bike seemed happy with that. tried running an ignition map to simulate stock mechanical and vacuum advance. not going as well with the factory ignition numbers. wont be getting into serious tuning until i get intakes brazed from aluminum, filter setup airtight around the face of the throttle bodies, and throttle linkage and intake balancing. fighting a losing battle without getting everything airtight and precise before i start tuning. and i need to find my injector flow rate before i do anything. and new clean sparkplugs.
