Rear drive damage...
Finally started cleaning up the rear drive on dad's build and found this. Looks like something got out of alignment maybe and started to remove some material. I ran out of cleaner, but any ideas? Should I start shopping for a new drive unit?

The teeth look square, thats important. It almost looks like the threads from a not stuck on the shaft. Hard to say from the picture. If the lash feels good, and every thing is tight, i'd say go with it. But make sure the nut is tightened correct, and is in good shape

The threaded shaft doesn't get near enough anything in there to rub up against. That looks more like a metal shaving from removal/installation of the nut and that locking tab.
As Cyborg says, the threads look OK. My guess looking at that pic is it was only the locking tab or nut that lost some material, in which case no biggie

Got it cleaned up more and that's what it looks like. The teeth are good and everything turns nicely. I'll clean up the "shaving" and continue with the build
Thanks for the input.

Are you sure that the nut hasn't been cross-threaded? The shaft is toughened and that would seem to me to be the only way you would get that spiral of thread sticking out.
