A few steps fwd and a step backward

#1

Post by 77Gowing »

Yesterday I replaced my aftermkt lower dust seals with OEM seals...mighty fine.
This morning when I torqued up the front axle and lower fork caps I proceeded to install my left and right caliper assemblies.
It was then that I had lots of fluid coming out of the Left caliper. I rebuilt all my calipers (again did not use OEM parts).
At any rate I took the caliper off the brake line and gave it a good once over...the dust boot ring clip had come off and the boot was leaking oil. So, I reset the boot and and clip and went for a bleed and then that's when it hit me that the boot is just a dust seal so the inner seal must be bad. I had intended to take my baby for my first legal GW ride today since it's sunny. So I went back in the house and ordered an OEM seal, clip and boot. At least I did one thing right in my rebuilt, I bought Old Fogey SS pucks. I also installed the Randakks MC to replace my working original with broken mirror mount.
After that, I open the pitcock, pulled the choke and went for a start. It took a few minutes of intermittent starter operation with proper cool down intervals and she start really nice. I ran her up to temp and all seems good with the engine and carbs.
Not too bad for a wanker whoe's all thumbs eh?

action1 Some progress is better than none! Just an aside, I've used several aftermarket (K&L) caliper and master cylinder kits and never had an issue. Hope the new parts take care of the leak!

As I recall I used K&L kits on my rebuild, so I guess I must of "Ham fist-ed" the rebuild. Wouldn't be the first time.
I went out this morning and was looking over my bike and noticed micro cracks on the tire sidewalls. Who knows how old these tires are, so I ordered some new shoes for her this morning. Shinko master tourers or something like that.
Too late to complain about how much this bike has cost me and besides I've learned a ton and enjoyed most of it, cept for when I prove I'm inept.
