Electric fuel pump on a 77
I have a 77 that I am installing a 1200 fuel pump on and I was wondering where would be the best place to tap into the electrics for the fuse and wiring to the pump.
On my 79 I came off the accessory terminal but the 77 does not have one.
Thanks. Dave

Re: Electric fuel pump on a 77
I would wire it thru a relay direct to any circuit that is hot when the key is on. Some members wire in a tip over sw, so that it will stop pumping in the case of a tip over. I only use the relay .leggman wrote:I have a 77 that I am installing a 1200 fuel pump on and I was wondering where would be the best place to tap into the electrics for the fuse and wiring to the pump.

Better yet... wire the relay power into the run-stop switch. This way if the switch is set to stop, the pump won't run.

Don't see the advantage to that, but it would work if you use a relay.

That would be an easy way to disable the pum during maintenance. Makes sense. Or a small toggle switch under the shelter half.

The pump only pumps until the carbs are full. If the bike is not running it will shut down till the carbs need fuel

Unless the bike is on its side and gas is pouring out of the carbs....
FWIW, I considered an electric pump and even experimented with a vacuum pump but in the end I rebuilt the mechanical one.

If the bike is on its side, especially a side car rig, you have a few other problemsSidecar Bob wrote:Unless the bike is on its side and gas is pouring out of the carbs....

Yeah. I guess it wouldn't be much worse than a gravity feed petcock.
BTW: I experimented with the pump before I got the sidecar for the 'Wing.

Re: Electric fuel pump on a 77
I wired in the electric pump today but I still don't have a battery for the bike yet so I was unable to check it. I used the black/white wire going to the coils as my switching/coil wire for the relay and used an inline auto blade type fuse of 20 amps going straight from the battery to the pump through the relay of course. I ran a heavy ground wire from the battery to one of the mounting bolts for the regulator and the relay ground and the pump ground tie in there. I need to get a battery but I don't want to get fleeced in the process.

Easy test, do you have a set of jumper cables?
Hook up to car/truck/riding mower and see it it works as intended.
