Carburetor rebuild question
Good day everyone! I'm new to the forum and to motorcycles in general, just picked up a 1979 goldwing and am midway through rebuilding my carbs (as seems necessary with any gl1000 that sits for a while) I find that the seal in my #4 carb has expanded/melted? Into the passages of the carb itself..... Any advice on cleaning this gunk out?

Re: Carburetor rebuild question
Spray carb cleaner or brake cleaner, compressed air. Or an ultrasonic dip tank. Do not dip in Carb cleaner, it will kill your shaft seals.

Thank you both for the replies, Oldewing I will be trying your advice after work, and fish thank you for the welcome, even with only posting once and reading through the existing threads there is a lot of information readily available which it seems will tell me just about everything I need to know regarding this bike. Can't say how much I appreciate it!

Re: Carburetor rebuild question
What "seal" are you talking about..there are no seals..just o rings on the jets and needle seat, gasket on the bowl and d rings to the plenum???
But yes..NO dipping, boiling OK, Randakk kit the best.

Re: Carburetor rebuild question
Welcome from the other side of the hill. Yeah I've seen that. I believe it is caused by ethanol in the fuel we burn.
I found the end of the internet

Re: Carburetor rebuild question
That actually brings me to another question, the only non ethanol fuel I have available in my area is a premium, would running this be a worthy investment?

Re: Carburetor rebuild question
If you rebuild using a Randakk kit, then regular unleaded fuel will be fine.

Re: Carburetor rebuild question
Cheap carb kits deteriorate in no time. I tried using a cheap bowl gasket from a kit which fit perfect but would swell so much it held the float. Take it off, dry it, and it looks like new. I think the brand was True Jet.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Re: Carburetor rebuild question
Randakk's rubber will hold up to both heat and ethanol when it comes to the rubber in your carbs don't go cheap.

Re: Carburetor rebuild question
As a rookie myself, I can advise getting Randakks carb rebuild video - makes the whole job virtually foolproof
