76 Cafe "Triple 9"
I just finished my long project. About three years ago I started looking for a bike I could buy cheap and make my own. After looking through the classifieds for a while I ran across a few GL1000's and thought to myself, "That is a mean looking engine" I quickly did a search for "custom GL1000" and came across a beautiful golden clad wing. I looked at my options and was on my way to buy this beauty for $650 (I talked him down from $900)

Re: 76 Cafe "Triple 9"
After Three years of sneaking out to my small 12ftX16ft garage/shed I finally finished. I gleamed a lot of useful information from this site and want to say thank you to everyone who has answered a technical question on this site because I've read most of them. This was my first attempt at restoring/customizing a bike. I was a little nervous, but through a lot of trial and error I figured most of it out. I did all of the work myself except for covering the seat and making a few welds. I named her "Triple 9" for the displacement. Let me know what you think. I have a lot of pictures of the project and plan on doing a full write up!

Re: 76 Cafe "Triple 9"
After installing the clip-ons I realized the stock shelter panels weren't going to work very well so I went to work shaping my own. I used a spare shelter and lid and after a hundred hours or so I finally finished it. I started with foam and did my final shaping with bondo. I then laid fiberglass over the plug I created. covered it in gelcoat, sanded some more and then painted.
You can see the difference in width between the stock panels and my new fiberglass ones. You can see my Plug in the background.GL1000 Triple 9

Some more pictures of the fiberglass work. It really did take over a hundred hours. I don't know if I'd do it again. Fiberglass is really nasty stuff to work with too...

I spent way too mutch time on the polishing wheel. I don't think I've ever been so addicted to anything. Once I started I couldn't stop.

What do you think of the straight pipes? It sounds pretty mean.

Beautiful creation. I love that shelter. Meticulous workmanship.

I cut away the exposed section of an extra gas tank. I then had a friend at work weld in a patch panel I made. I wanted more of the engine and carb to be exposed.

I raised the shelter an inch or two so it left a big hole in the back. I made up a patch panel and had my friend at work weld it up for me. (He is an awesome welder by the way)

Re: 76 Cafe "Triple 9"
I shaved the handlebar mounts down on the triple tree and then polished away. I had to put on a new master cylinder because the stock one hit the forks. I found a key switch that fit nicely and wired it down through the triple tree. You can also see I lowered the front forks by an inch and a half for a lower front end. My gas gauge was pretty bad so I took it apart and repainted it and designed a triple nine logo into it. The decal around the gas gauge was also pretty tattered after I removed it so I cut a new one out of thin aluminum then polished, masked it with vinyl and sand blasted the lettering in.

To show how long it actually took, here is a picture of my son on the wing the day I brought it home.
He is now 4 and his little sister is 2
