I'm going to order belts soon. Question on the Tensioners. How do I know if I need to replace? Don't want to do the job twice.

What doug said. Quiet and smooth are what you want. Spin it as fast as you can with your hand and put it up by your ear. You should hear just a whisper of noise.

Thank-You
Did this job today following your instructions and the bike is up and running great.
The only place I differed is I just took the bottom rad hose off and pulled the rad back out of the way. It was a slight nuisance but not to bad
Thanks for the excellent instructions
Tom

Talk about a NAKED 'Wing! Got my Faux Tank off, seat, radiator, and timing covers off, and she is really naked. Now, for the fun part - I got the belts from Napa this morning, and she's ready for the big step. I've printed the pdf, and I'm going to go VERY SLOWLY. I've never done a timing belt, and I'm not sure where the alternator bolt is... Wish me luck.

Yea that cover has a kind of a tapered cut to it.
The Timing index cover; Look on the left side of the engine on the top of the engine behind the carburators. Just about straight underneath the Fuel filter input. You should see a small cover with a Large spot for a straight slot screwdriver. that is it.

I think it's in the area of the timing belts, I have an '82 GL1100... Oh well, I never opened what I thought I found anyway - I just did it according to the manual, and ended up being one tooth off on the right side... At least it was the right side, so I didn't have to take the ENTIRE thing apart again.
I put it all back together, after turning it with the wrench - to make sure nothing was hitting anything. Well, I heard this LOUD ticking from the right side, and I knew it was the valves. I did the screwdriver to the ear and pressed it against parts of the engine to listen, but I couldn't hear anything that way... Then I imagine the valve seats, slapping the head... I tore it apart (about three times as fast this time!) and moved it one tooth, and it is all back together and awesome again!
It didn't look like my timing belts were THAT worn, but the peace of mind I now have is worth more than what I had to put into it today. Thank you, NGW, for I wouldn't have even known to do that in the first place.
