The Jalopy: '78-79 Mash-up.

Post #1 by Track T 2411 » Mon Jan 02, 2017 11:44 am

The frame donor: 1978 'roller' (with title) I purchased about a year ago 'just because.' I figured I'd keep my eyes open for a bargain on an 1000 with no title, or mess around and drop in an 1100 that I have sitting collecting dust. Another member here had purchased it and transplanted the engine into his machine. It's mostly complete, and looks like it was a runner until recently, as it has newer but well used tires, there was plenty of fresh lube in the final drive joints, etc. It is also 'well broken in' shall we say! lolol I pulled it out of storage in early December to make room for my '81, and figured I'd start prepping it for the 1100 tansplant.

After posting this photo in the 'What did you do to your Wing today' thread, I had another member inquire about it, and we soon struck up a deal...

1979 that had sat for a number of years, but well cared for. It's missing a few parts, and a few others have been swapped out, but all in all a very clean, 'refreshable' bike. Except... no title!
Lucky me!

So, let's do this!

The objective of this 'Mash-up' is to take the bestest parts of each bike and build myself a 'nekkid' rider. While I'm not into Rat bikes, the idea of a nicely 'patina'ed' bike, a jalopy if you will, appeals to me, and will allow me to ignore the more costly and time consuming 'beautification' process in favor of getting it on the road. Carb and brake system rebuilds, engine and cooling system flushes, and the requisite overall general inspection, along with the obvious requirement to swap the frames, should keep me busy for at least a few of the darkest days of winter!

We made the deal on the '79 just days before Christmas, and arranged to pick up the bike on Dec 26th. I had to work Christmas eve, and as I pulled into into our driveway that evening, the headlights swept across the '78 sitting in the yard, still covered with snow. If I had a garage, I thought to myself, I could have that thing down to the frame in a couple of hours...
For some reason, I didn't sleep well that night (...were snuggled, all nicely in bed, while visions of GoldWings danced in their heads...). lolol

On the edge of madness...

20161225_110157.jpg

I'd like to say that I came downstairs to find the '78 all set up in the driveway like this, and blame the elves, but it was entirely my doing...
The morning started out relatively warm (30F degrees), and my partner was nice enough to let me out and do my thing while her son and a bunch of his friends ('20 somethings') made havoc in the house.

Two hours and several cups of hot chocolate later,
20161225_124017.jpg

20161225_124040.jpg

I don't think I had one bolt or nut that was a problem to loosen, at least at this point. I can only wish for that to continue!
By this time the wind was getting quite brisk, and the damp was soaking into my bones something terrible. I headed inside to clean up a spot in the basement.

I drafted one of the kids running around in the house, and carried the frame into the basement as we were being pelted by rain, then cleaned up the assorted loose parts and stowed the tools, feeling very happy about my progress!

Good progress on it so far..... carrying it out of the basement fully assembled is another story though. :IDTS: I did my 76 build mostly in the basement, yet the motor was put back in my garage the following spring into a mostly assembled bike frame and wheels.
Hey what are good neighbours or 20 somethings there for.... but to help the cause too.
Current Rides:
1976 GL1000 Complete restoration of the bike with LTD gold spoke wheels and parts
1981 GL1100 Standard model - Sept 2018 start of cosmetic refresh, nice original condition
1983 CB1000 Custom-Low mileage full cosmetic restoration back to factory new.
1984 GL1200 Standard model in showroom condition-two owner bike.
1984 CX650E Restored summer 2017 - a rare Eurosport model-excellent one owner bike.

Yeah, actually been there, done that with an 1100 frame and engine. The plan this time is to just work on the small stuff in the basement, and clean up the frame, then pull it back out in the spring. I have an 8X8 shed that will keep the '79 relatively protected, but that is also housing the kid's Yamaha for the winter. I didn't really plan on a frame swap project when I agreed to store it for him. :IDTS:

December 26th. A friend and I headed out for the 'middle of everywhere,' Chicago, to pick up the '79. A few hours and several toll booths later, my truck had a new to me bike adorning the bed... It was a very pleasant visit, and I was quite happy with the condition of the bike. Thank you very much warhead_71!

Ready to roll!

January 1st, 2017. It was pretty nice in the afternoon, so I figured I'd pull off the calipers and master cylinders for future work. I didn't realize that the rear caliper/mount was one piece, and I'd have to remove the rear wheel. I think that will have to wait until I can plan it better. I did get the front brakes all removed, so I guess the next step will be to compare the general condition of the two sets and choose the better ones. I also have the carbs sitting on the bench, and will likely be ordering a kit for those in the next few days.
The frame is solid, but has some surface rust here and there. Not sure what direction I'll go with that yet, but I have to keep reminding myself of the objective...

Might be wise to put your "seconds" part in the for sale section as you go. If you realize the worst fender is usable, getting it up for sale while you are thinking about it is very efficient.
