Hey Chef;
Sounds Like You Need To Do One Of 4 Things, Sychronize Your Carbs, Adjust Your Valves, Check Your Sparkplugs Gap And Fireing, Or Check Your Compression....
And Theres Probibly Other Thing I'm Not Thinking Of Right Now....

Valve clearance shouldn't be put off for too long, and I would say that it's time you check your clearances. The clymer manual for my GS1100 said check them every 600 miles, that is insane or wrong, I don't know wich it is. At any rate I would look at the valves every 5k myself.

My bike was having a problem like that two, but I would say that #1 was cold and the rest were the right temp. Turned out when I did the carb rebuild a piece of brass got into one of the jets. Haven't had a problem like that sence then.

this bike sat out in the yard uncovered for a year all i had yo do was charge the battery and she cranked right up, so there may be some varnish buildup in that carb, i hate to rebuild a carb i have 4 of them dissasembled in a box already (got them that way) but i will check into a valve adjustment rightaway first thanks the chef

You probably wouldn't have to rebuild the carbs, just give them a good cleaning. Good luck on it all though.

By the way, what type of valves do the GL's have, I know the 1200 is hydrolic, but are the 1000 and 1100 the shim underbucket, or a setscrew?

Valves are setscrew adjustment type. Very easy to do.

Cool, the DOHC honda's of the same era as the 1100 use shims. I don't like messing with them so I let a shop do them for me.

This pic is taunting me on how much work has to be done to get at the valves for my GS1100. Oh well, the next bike I get will not have any such things or problems. Hello GS1200 (at least I hope).

Yea on the Wing it is about as easy as they come. Some bikes I have wrenched on you have to be part contortionist to get to the valves.
