Help With Carb Adjustments
Ok All;
My 1975 GL1000 And I Need Help
I Need An Exact Break Down On The Tuning Of My Carbs.... From Using The Vacume Sycronizer All The Way To Vacume Adjusting The Air Fuel Mixture.... Now Heres What I Have So Far
Number One Three And Four Have The Needle Bouncing All Over The Place And Number Two Is The Only Steady One But Number Two Is Producing Almost No Vacume Pull, No Leaks At The Carb To Plenum, Carb Its Self, Intake/Down Tube To Carb Or Head.... And Compression On The Bike Is 1 125, 2 127, 3 130, 4 132... Pounds.... So Before I Loose What Little Sanity I Have Left, Please Help Me To Figure This One Out....
By The Way... Bike Runs Good Has A Slight Mis Every Once In A While, Starts First Turn, Warms Up Quick And Is Very Responsive... Still A Little Rich Though...
Thanks In Advance....

1) how are your 'vacuum-gauge-adapter' to 'manifold' connections doing ?
Are they air-tight ? Are the small o-rings in place ?
2) did you set the idle to 1000-1200 rpm ?
3) chokes opening fully ? all of them ?
Operating freely / don't bind ? / they all 'fall back' ?/
all the way ?
Sync:
..warm engine
..turn each pilot screw clockwise until it lightly seats,
and then back to specification (1975 model = 1 3/8 turns out)
...set idle to 1000-1200 rpm

...not sure I quite understand what you mean ?Vacume Adjusting The Air Fuel Mixture
...checked the air cutoff valve ?Bike Runs Good Has A Slight Mis Every Once In A While
In order to make the whole carb-thingie air tight
you might wonna' look at the torque spec's
at the bottom of this CHART
Hope this helps restore your sanity.Before I Loose What Little Sanity I Have Left, Please Help Me To Figure This One Out
PS: if, at some point, you have any left over; can I have some of it? .-)

Biggest tip I can give is to balance 1 & 3 then 2 & 4 then balance the two banks to each other using the adjuster on # 4. It takes time especially the first time doing it. The adjustments will change each time you go to tighten the locknut. I think I spent the majority of a morning the first time while I figured out what was going on. Even now that I have done a few I can still spend an hour or two to get it just right. If you are using the vaccum gages most have little plastic dampner screws that you can turn in and out to minimize the bouncing of the needle. If your reading on # 2 is still low unscrew the gage and see if the bike is running poorly and improves when you block the hole in the intake with your finger. If so then I would suspect your gages/ tubing are faulty in some way??

Hey Octane;
1 Yes There Tight , Yes The Little O Rings Are In Place
2 Yes I dle Set Between 1000-1200 rpm's
3 Yes The Chokes Operate Smoothly Open To Close To Open All Four Carbs...

The Mixture Screws For Going From Rich To Lean On The Right Outside Corner Of The Carbs...not sure I quite understand what you mean ?
Yes And It Works The Way It Is Supposed To, The Carbs Were Rebuilt By HD From The PO, It Just Ran Way Too Rich And Fouled The Plugs So I Decided To Check The Floats And Make Sure Of All The Adjustments My Self......checked the air cutoff valve ?
Hey Wiskerfish;
Did Not Know That Was What They Were For, Now I Know To Use Them...If you are using the vaccum gages most have little plastic dampner screws that you can turn in and out to minimize the bouncing of the needle.
Tried That And The Bike Dose Not Drop Or Raise When I Pull The Vacume From That Carb.... Put Finger Over Hole And Hear Sligt Vacume, Pull 1,3,4, And Loud Vacume And Rpms Drop Right Now...If your reading on # 2 is still low unscrew the gage and see if the bike is running poorly and improves when you block the hole in the intake with your finger.

Hi RR
Glad to see that you got it fixed!
So what exactly was the problem that caused your carb trouble ?

Well The Pre Existing Carb Problem Was The Fuel Consumtion, And As For The Problems Last Night It Was The Fact I Did Not Have The Plastic Dampiners In Place Thats Why The Needles Were Bouncing All Over The Place... Bought My Guages Over 10 Years Ago And This Is The First Time I've Used Them On Four Carb Set Up... Just been Using Them On Single Carbs On Cars And Such, As For Number Two And No Vacume, It Wasn't Even Adjusted In Properly So No Reading Till About 1800 RPM's... But All Good Now... All Four Carbs Match And Like WF said Took About 1 1/2 Hours To Dial Them In... Get To The Last One And Have To Start Over Again... But All Done Now
