75 GL1000 Restoration progress

#1

Post by ramjet »

This is the 75GL1000 that I found in Wisconsin last September. She has 33K miles and has sat for the last 14 of her 35 years doing nothing. I've sold off the MAC exhaust system (MOTAD replacement), put the correct mirrors on, and performed a full engine service (belts, hoses, fluids, etc). Fork seals were done and carbs sent to Pistol Pete. Thanks to Whiskerfish and a few others on the forum I am getting very close to having all of the correct parts. She sits naked in the garage now with the gas tank out getting boiled and the swing arm being blasted and powder coated. My next jobs at hand are rebuilding front and rear brakes and refinishing the cracked instrument faces. Hope the picture actually posts!

These bikes were real works of art in their stock dress. Nice job and glad to see you are keeping her as she was meant to be.

Inspector good eye for the different year mods, Being once a field judge for the AMC on indians in the forty's i know the different year changes, but on the GL's I have a lot to learn, I had the same seat on my 1977 when I bought it,
Ramjey that is a very nice bike, I agree with Sagebrush and keep it as close to stock as you can.

"Looks great, a correct 75 seat and stock exhaust would make it perfect....."

And those two defects, plus the wrong mirrors, were the bargaining tools used to pay less than asked.
I would trade this seat outright for a 75 seat if anyone has one that is blemish free (cause this one is).....
I have a stock exhaust that needs some welding help which may go on it someday. She sits in the garage now really naked; swing arm out, rear fenders out, gas tank out, etc. Wonder what I can remove next?!

The engine guards. Did those come with the 75? Just asking because I have some big clunky ones on mine that I know are not original and I think yours are beautiful...along with the rest of the bike.
