To clean up the covers, soak them in paint remover. Sand with 400 wet paper. Buff like heck. Polish with metal polish..

Ok Sunnbobb, covers soaked, sanded, buffed (poorly) and polished. This is what I got! It's not perfect but that's not what I'm after. I'll settle for reaspectable : )

Now apply a car wax to help keep them that way.
I pulled the cover off my GL yesterday to find tiny specs of white corrosion already setting in on my polished bits in a matter of months of setting idle, covered!!

Yep, thats why there is a fan running as we speak in the trailer housing my race bikes and the Wing. That helps a little too. Especially in the spring when it gets below freezing at night and then up to 50 or so during the day.Hoosier Daddy wrote:Now apply a car wax to help keep them that way.

Some progress today. The engine is in the painted frame and the triple tree is on. Anyone notice that Honda changed from roller bearings in the '75 steering head to needle bearings in the '76 frame......When you're using 2 bikes to make one these things tend to make themselves known : )

Re: Nova Scotia '76 GL1000 do-over
Finally 17" rear rim is spoked to front hub. Had to shorten original spokes approx 1". Got the new thread rolled properly at Buchannan's Spoke & Rim (thanks Angel. Great job and good price too) Opened up diameter of spoke holes in rim a few drill sizes to adjust for new spoke angle and made custom cup washers between spoke nipples and rim to make up the difference and distribute load to edges of rim spoke indent and away from the hole itself. It wasn't too bad relacing the hub onto the rim as long as you follow the procedure and take your time. I have a Dunlop D404 120 90 -17 front tire on order to slap onto this.....only front tire I could find that comes close to OD of original front tire and fits on the rear rim. Once the bike is done I'll run her gentle for a while and keep a VERY close eye on the spoke tension. Also have new seals, guides and oil in front forks. Old rotors are true within 0.002".....lucky.

Re: Nova Scotia '76 GL1000 do-over
Hi Ohiobill,
I'm hopeful this works out. I'll have a tire on it next week but it'll be a few another few months before it's on the road. I'll certainly be checking spoke tension regularly once I start riding it. I want to be sure that oversizing the spoke holes in the rim doesn't cause issues. I had to do that to get the spokes pointing the right way because of the much smaller diameter of the front hub vs the back hub. That's why I made large cup style washers directly underneath the spoke nipples...to distribute the load around the edges of the rim spoke indent and away from the edges of the hole itself. In any case, my point is modifying the rim is usually frowned upon so be very careful that everything is sound and secure and check spoke tension and rim condition regularly when you start riding on this mod : )

I love to see these frame-off builds...it looks like you are doing a great job. I always liked the big front tire / rim on Octane's Bulldog, cant wait to see your pics of that. Nice exhaust too! Happy wrenching and good luck...
