Hay guys,
I'm thinking on looking at a CX500. The guy told me it has a broken timing chain. Would this had harm the motor in any way. I know if a belt brakes on a GL1000 it can but what if it's on a CX500.
He asking $300 as is.

Could , likely would, bend valves at least.

Re: CX500 Broken timing chain
I wouldn't go into it without figuring on an engine. Good timing chains in healthy engines are not prone to breaking,I'm guessing there are other issues?

Re: CX500 Broken timing chain
Chances are you've got some buggered valves...
but that being said, the tensioner is notorious for *not* being adjusted properly, too tight or too loose.
Given the fact that I've bought several running CX's for <$200, I wouldn't pay a dime over $100 for this one *unless* it's in mint body condition with side panels, original seat, etc.

Re: CX500 Broken timing chain
Usually, one of the camchain guides lets go and it makes a noise like a diesel on a cold morning before the chain itself breaks, but I can tell you from experience that CX camchains do occasionally break. Mine was the 650 engine I had in my 500.
When a camchain goes you really should at least take the heads off and make sure the valves are straight. I decided I didn't want the bigger engine enough to spend the extra $$ so I put a new camchain & guides into the original engine and parted the 650 engine out. Wouldn't you know - when checked the valves before putting the heads on eBay, all of the valves were fine.
But you can't count on that being the case.
On the other hand, even if the valves are bent, you could easily double your money parting it out...
