A 78 With 77 Front Brakes?

#1

Post by ZZ Pete »

I'm Back. Well after a slight detour on the Honey Do Highway, I found my way to the garage and almost got the old 78 ready to fire. I plan on doing a weber carb conversion but plan to start it on the original carbs to see if there is any unwanted knocks or groans in the old motor. It probably has'nt started in 5 years or so but I did the compresion check, wires etc. and all that looks acceptable except for one thing. THE FRONT BRAKES! Its a 1978 with 1977 wire wheels so the rotors are 1977, I measured them and found out the 1977 rotors are thicker than 1978s so the caliper bracket wont slide between the fork and the rotor. So what to do, new rotors, new caliper brackets is the wire wheel wider than the mag? May be the cheapest route would be to find another junker with a complete front end. Its always nice to have spares of things you'll probably never need but you never know. Peace, Love, and Gasoline ZZ Pete B.S. All suggestions Welcome, well almost all.:?:

ZZ Pete,
Are you wanting to keep the wire wheels? If so, I recommend the followng:
1. Get a set of 75-77 forks, or fork lowers.
2. get a set of 75-77 caliper brakets.

OR:
Get a 78-79 (the only difference is the opening size in each spoke) front wheel whith rotors.

Thanks Frenchy, I thought as much. I just got it running so while I'm looking for the pieces, I think I'll start on the single carb conversion. Like your stuff on ebay I'm sure I'll end up buying something soon! ZZ Pete[/i]
