Pop's Bike, 75 GL1000

#1

Post by cbghia »

Alright, I am new here. I have built a few old CBs, but this is my first GL. My dad has wanted a Goldwing for years. He had an old Silverwing with a Vetter back in the day, but I am going to get him back on 2 wheels with this.

I found this on Craigslist for $250. The engine turns, but the brakes are both bad. I think it mainly needs a good cleaning, but I have to take a look in those cylinders.

*Sadly I cannot post links yet.

Decent shape for what they are.

I am going to need a new exhaust, as this one has rusted through. Frame seems to be in good shape. The engine looks really good. The front master is toast. I got the c clip out, but it is rusted together. I am going to pull apart the calipers, but I can see exposed piston and it is rusty, so I am worried about the pitting. If anyone has a line on calipers or master cylinders (front and rear) let me know. Also the forks are pretty nasty, and I may need new fork tubes. Let me know if you have any of that laying around, please.

I did get some polish on the side covers and the "tank" sides. They shined up pretty well. Got to hit up the saddle bags and the fairing. I thought I had a windjammer on there, but it is a Pacifico.

Gonna be fun!

Sounds like a bit of vinegar might be the right choice then. Good news. That's the way to find any leaks right away also.

So this is what my tank looks like. The bike has been sitting since 86. I just took a quick glance before and I can't believe it is this clean.

Sure looks to be a nice bike to work from. Sounds like you want a bagger, and you have a nice fairing and bags to work from there. Any idea on why the tank was out. That is not an easy removal and it looks too good inside for it to have been a problem.

I agree, those bags are great. Definitely worth the effort to clean and refurbish!
Congrats on the buy! Keep us posted.
