Timing belt changes

My 81 Wing has 40K on it and makes a kind of rattling or chattering kind of noise from first gear until it gets going. Could this be a timing belt issue?

I think the chattering is normal with age. If you rev the engine higher and slip the clutch more does it still chatter?? The timing belts wouldn't have anything to do with it. The chains in the motor can make alot of noise if the engine is lugged too low.

The recommended interval for belts is 5 years/ 50,000 miles. If you've got 40,000 I'd change them. If one breaks......say goodbye to your valves and possibly a piston or two. The GL is a ZERO CLEARANCE MOTOR!!!

It's better to be save than sorry.
Annie had been sitting for 5 years, I had no idea how long ago the belts had been changed so I changed them, just to give me reasurrance that everything is ok.
