Triple tree fork mods

#1

Post by 82aspy »

seen a bunch on this site and who knows where else all over the place

might as well have current info in one spot

the latest i stumbled on
Kawasaki GPZ 750 forks. This was for better brakes, and the anti-dive feature, and the 16” wheel.

Did you use the Kawasaki triple tree or are those forks the same diameter and spacing as a stock GL?

also the spacing of the tree is slightly wider, requiring a spacer on each side, on the axle, inside of the forks. Been a long time since i built Cyborg, and my memory isn't what it used to be....at least i don't think it is

Sometimes it's just a matter of finding bearings with the correct dimensions for the neck and donor stem. Then changing the steering stops around to work with the lower triple you are using.

I used the front end from an 03-04 gsxr 1000. You can find the bearings you need at http://www.allballsracing.com they have a nifty tool to search the bike you have and will list all the conversion kits for various front ends.

The busa stem is not over long I think it will work by grinding some off the neck tube on the frame because the race on top is alot narrower than the orginal GL was,

I know someone who may be able make trees to fit GL1000 and have the correct spacing for the GSXR forks and wheels

I know he has made trees to fit Harley forks and wheels on a CB750 frame

My original forks (on left with TRAC sticker in pic below) had caps on the bottoms so removing 4 nuts let the wheel & axle come out together. The new ones (on right in pic with the axle in front of the sliders) look much like the ones on your '77 (pic below my before & after), screwed into the left leg and with a pinch bolt on the right.

you might be able to graft a newer 750 Magna front end on if they are 39mm. My guess is it'll be complicated to keep the 83 wheel and brakes. Mine required shimming to get the wheel centered because the Magna fork triples are narrower than the gl's.

You can use 1100 or 1200 trees, they bolt on and then use 39mm or 41 mm forks from a donor bike. Dangeruss has a good write up on how to use cbr forks.

checked out steering stem bearings for 84 gl1200, same bearings Part Number 22-1020 are used on
