ethanol removal of gas
i live near many marina's and i buy marine gas which is nol-free for my 80 gl1100 84 gl1200. but that free cost's $1 a gal. more. but yet i am not considering converting to a single carb it is a must for me. rebuild kits are $25 each x 4 = $100,plus synchronizing, plus if something wasn't done properly during back-yard re-build which one? blood sweat and fears. i can see a 28 pict vw carb off e-bay $20, rebuild kit $20, piece of 4" x 24" 1/8" $12, sick of home depot dvw 1 1/4" electrical conduit $8 a tube of blue rtv sealant $6=$66 and using the stock air plenum with homemade laundry detergent boxes a better route to run. 1 carb 1 throttle cable 1idle screw 1 main screw and your through. this is the direction i am in now and i've read the arguments in this post but i read unique carburation at the top and i would like to hear from anyone letting me know if i will have to change jetting, idle size or what to get this off the ground. i know i'm a newbie so forgive me.

Re: ethanol removal of gas
Would really be interested to hear how this setup works out. You'll occasionally find a set of single carb plenums on e-bay. I think there is a good reason for this.
It's hard to beat a set of well tuned GL carburetors. I've used 10% ethanol in mine for years without real problems.
Once I had a set of GL1000 carbs that had bowl gaskets that expanded with Ethanol fuel. They expanded so much that it kept the floats from going up and down properly. This was just about a month after a complete rebuild. Used aftermarket bowl gaskets from Nalco. I think they have fixed that issue, however.

I have to agree with Halfnaked. A well tuned set of stock carbs are the best way to go. If I wanted to play with VW carb, I would buy a VW

I've highlighted in red a couple of things. Not sure how you will use any cardboard with the plenum.
Also, RTV has no place near gasoline. They don't go well together at all.

X2 on RTV and gas. It just breaks loose and finds places to go, usually not good ones.

Re: ethanol removal of gas
what a typo (it was 1:30 something in the morning) as i punched the submit button i cringed- seen it couldn't stop it. oh well what i do with the laundry boxes is peel the face off (the outside) and cut my own gaskets out for the old air plenum and new homemade intake runner manifold and use the rtv, just a spot on the corners, to hold them and let that dry overnight and assemble. as soon as i know it's correct then break down and re-assembly with pictures on the 80 gl then on to my 84 asp. just fired the 80 with single and hit the rode for about five miles. just received my 80 copy key from this the ngw club, ordered it sunday and it came in today -it works- also the fastest service i've had on personal mail and especially a mail order. hats off to them! got to go in and eat some dinner then get my coat on and you know, cuyler 1

I never peeled the face off of the cardboard, I just cut it and used it. I'll still use it from time to time, but I look first for gasket material.
