Re: SlyDog's Cafe' Project 2 - '80 GL1100 (SDC)
OK so help me out.. where is the Crank Seal? Where is it replaced in the manual?!
https://www.dropbox.com/s/lr1m7i0w6slto ... 0%20SM.pdf
I think it's somewhere in section 8 but you still need to split the engine case!!?
I just want to say again, I'm not splitting the case..
So if that's required, then I'm not changing the crank seal.

On pg. 7-16 it shows a picture of the 2 crank pulleys. Take the 19mm bolt from the front of the crank. slide the pulleys off the crank pull the seal and reinstall.

I found it on the floor under the engine while i was cleaning. I'm not sure if it came from the bike or not.
That's called a "Woodruff Key" and it may have come out of a slot on the end of the crankshaft (if you have the timing belt pulleys off to do the seal) or some other place like that. -Anyway, it goes somewhere in some shaft that has a notch cut into it that it fits into to keep something from turning. -I think the camshafts even have those to keep their pulleys in the right place. Needless to say wherever it came from it's very important you find out where and that it finds it's way back before you start putting anything back together!

Re: SlyDog's Cafe' Project 2 - '80 GL1100 (SDC)
So i need 3 of the napa seals? I just re-read Jimmy's post.. he said to get some black permatex RTV Silicone high temp gasket maker for the cap at the back of the cams? if there's 2 napa seals on the left cam? does he mean use the RTV for only the cap on the right?

Re: SlyDog's Cafe' Project 2 - '80 GL1100 (SDC)
I think the 1100 has a plug type seal on the rear left side. So I stand corrected. on the 1100 you will only need two pf the napa seals, both in the front side of the cams, but a plug type seal on the rear of the left side cam

Re: SlyDog's Cafe' Project 2 - '80 GL1100 (SDC)
cams are re-installed now
Torqued to 20 ft pounds.
i also re-torqued the heads to 45 pounds.. thank you guys for letting me know about the change from 40 to 45 pounds.
how ever the 6x20 bolt at the bottom of the head IS NOT supposed to be torqued to 100 ft pounds!!!!
do not over tighten that! you'll strip the threads!
I used the black permatrex gasket maker around the cam cap at the back of the left cam. Then new gasket and cover on the rear of the left cam. no prob.
started using new bolt dress up kit..
installed the fuel pump.
i also installed the new heat shield gaskets and re-installed the heat shields.. i installed the cam pullys and torqued them to 20 ft pounds also.
followed the manual and saw which ones have the boss facing out and which ones doesn't.
i haven't installed the new belts yet because i have to get a new crank seal still. anyone know the part number, is there a napa replacement part number or where else i could order it and HOW to remove the existing one without halving the case?
