Nice idea. I will have a crack at that after I've ridden it around for a short while. I want to retain the ability to revert to the mechanical pump if needs be until i have confidence in the electrical one.sunnbobb wrote:I'm enjoying your thread. Now that you have gone to an electric fuel pump and a coil based tach, you can remove that tach/pump mount. Once the mount is off, take a dead blow hammer and tap the end of the cam sticking out. It will snap cleanly off as easy as pie. Then you can fab a cover for the hole that is left. This will further reduce weight and clean up the look on the back of the right head.

Here are a couple photos of my CF Goldwing
What did you make the molds out of? you've got some good line definition there in the side cowls. Mine are less defined as I am relying on flattening back the gel coat of resin to achieve a shine. Silicone faced molds are the only way i've been able to achieve definition of finer lines or details but i haven't used them here as i didn't mind losing some of the sharper edges.
Do you still have the molds?
How many layers of weave did you use for your components?
Any stress cracks or weaknesses developed since you've been riding around on it?

I'd love to be able to answer your questions with a straight face - I cant!

I must admit that I've been able to convince most people that ask that the CF its real! Only the really discerning have been able to quickly see that its a wrap. Certainly an eye turner
I actually had a few people sort of convinced on this forum that I had hand drawn the CF pattern

I thought it might be a vinyl, but difficult to be sure without feeling the flex of the panels and seeing in person the depth of weave. Ultimately it gives an identical effect from a distance and looks very neat, so good job.
Maybe a 100 man hrs difference in the time taken for final finish and a few kgs difference in the weight afterwards.
There are certainly a plethora of CF vinyl wraps available for automotive applications
I have only seen 1 genuine CF GL application and that fellow wrapped CF over his original rear seat hump, so hadn't crafted a genuine CF part either, i'm not sure he ever finished the project.
I am endeavouring to replace every panel (Including the air box and air ducting tin parts) with Carbon fibre so that I never have to worry about rust or Aluminium Oxidation on anything other than the frame.
Will see how I go, not far off temporary completion now. I hear my latest order of bare weave and pre-preg weave has arrived at home ready for when i get back

Incidentally Bob,
Can you post a close up front shot of your Faux CF cam belt covers?
I'm thinking i'll do them in CF also and maybe the tappet covers also, but will have to look into oil and temp resistant resins for that job.
I like the polished aluminium cam belt covers but i think maybe it needs to be CF all the way.
Also, considering casting 'honda' faux tank covers rather than leaving them bare...... thoughts.....

Here's a few pics I just snapped.
The CF weave effect is quite stunning in the bright sunlight, it actually moves as you walk around.... seems that have a Fresnel Lens Effect in the vinyl

Re: Full Carbon Fibre GL1000 Goldwing
Not a great deal to report from this swing. I was occupied with selling on my car and getting a replacement. Job interviews and family goings on etc
I did however manage to finish the side panels for the faux tank. They took almost 2m2 of CF, so alot more than planned. I'm happy with the finish and now need to spend some time refinishing the side panels and tail/ seat section as well as the air scoops for the rad. I started making the cam covers but was not happy with a 1st set so am going to restart those.
Anyway, all back together and i've had it running, not well yet, needs some tuning and i would like to get my electronic ignition in there, which is proving difficult as the old points have rounded off and seized screws and bolts in them.

A quick close up of the weave in the RH side panel.
And a 3/4 rear shot
I need to work more on some of the panel gaps but until the loom is cut back a little then it will remain a bit in situe as the bottom hinges are a little tight. And a 3/4 rear shot

Re: Full Carbon Fibre GL1000 Goldwing
So this swing I was again distracted by other more pressing matters but managed a few days on the Carbon Cafe during which time I manged to do the following:
Make negatives of the cam belt covers and then cast CF units
Dismantled center stand and painted then oiled before re-installing
Checking timing, sychronising and tuning
I went out for a couple of short rides maybe totalling no more than 50km. It still feels like an old bike but a much tighter responsive one than that which i rode into Claremont a few months ago.
Great to be out riding it, I had people asking what it was when I stopped. http://ngwclub.com/forum/posting.php?mo ... 16&t=54363#
A few snaps taken on the swan river. Note the rear seat hump unit side pieces that bridge the gap between the seat and chassis are not finished and require flatting before a final weave layer and gel coat is applied.
And with the cam covers from the front, I really struggled to get the detail of the ridges in there but after alot of perseverance in sanding and resetting gel coats and accepting some minor air inclusions i was happy enough with the results.

Re: Full Carbon Fibre GL1000 Goldwing
The side view shows the deep shine I've managed to get with the resin finish on the side pods and tank. Rear seat hump is not finished. I should be able to acheive the same shine on that and the pieces between the frame and seat when complete.
I've also finished and added the radiator side cowls.
I have some idle circuit issues, but as I am thinking of upping the induction anyway I may skip a step here tinkering with these.

Re: Full Carbon Fibre GL1000 Goldwing
I also need to do away with the old mirrors, a rear view camera is the goal but i will probably opt for some smaller streetfighter mirrors in the meantime.
The center stand (now red) will also go when I have no further work to do.
Incidentally, the frame is still well intact down there but inside the metal bushing was badly corroded and ceased so it was worth the strip down suggested in other threads of this forum. The frame has been braced and welded to either replace corroded section along the bottom or just beef it up. I was aware of this when I bought the bike. Will post some photos if anyone is interested. Its a bit agricultural but well reinforced.
