Stator check
Hello All,
I'm putting a 78 engine together. I have 3 stators (2 GL1000's and one GL1100) I check the ohms of each wire to wire, 3 wires, 3 checks and I get 0.5 ohms with all three stators.
Then I check each wire to the center of the stator (ground). One GL1000 will not give me a reading in the M ohm range (all three wires checked individually). The other two start out at around 25 M ohms and then decline to about 7.
I'm sure this is a tech discussion already but I could not find it. My question is are any of these good? Secondly, I live in Ontario and there is a Sirius store here with a stator at a reasonable price, has anyone have experience with these stators.
I'm on a very tight budget (Wife) so I like to use the stator I have. I also don't mind pulling the engine if I'm wrong but I like your opinions.

There should not be any resistance from the wires to the frame. Should be open

The only way to check a stator is by voltage output, correct? The only thing a static check will tell you is that it is shorted and faulty.

V,oltage test while running is the best. 50volts ac between yellow leads. But a short between the wires and the case is a bad one.
If all the yellow, to yellow, to yellow are the same, I would give it a try. Different meters my cause different readings due to the resistance in the leads

Also when doing the resistance check don't hold the probes to the bare wires with your fingers. Use a clamp if possible. Your fingers can give a false reading. Not a lot, but it will affect it.

I was thinking the same thing. It would explain the decreasing readings

That does explain the decreasing readings, thanks. The two stators with the decreasing readings was tested using my fingers. Is there an advantage to using the 1100 stator?

I know that the aftermarket 1000, 1100 and 1200 are the same.

The fuel injected model of the 1200 is larger, won't fit int 1000/1100, and only the 1200 with a special rear cover

It doesn't sound like there is a problem with your stator. 25M is near insulation resistance...
what is your main concern with it, is the voltage ok?
when re-winding a 1200 stator a while back I found it had failed because of a faulty crimp connector (bad idea) at the y-connection. never heard of a gl1000 stator failure.
are you anywhere near Madoc?

Bob we have had numerous 1000 Stator failures documented. Of course the Infamous 3 Yellow wire connector melting down is a primary cause and it seems like many are associated with bikes that had never seen an oil change or at least very few. I think the acid builds up in the oil from neglect and subsequent breakdown and that erodes the insulation. But that is just a guess on my part.
