First Goldwing, first cafe build
Hey guys, picked up my first goldwing last night. '77 gl1000. Ive had plenty of other hondas, all newer. This will be my first older build.
Supposedly, the timing belt(s) snapped on it. I pulled the plugs before buying and didnt see anything catastrophic but there was quite a bit of carbon build up. Bike is fairly clean overall and the PO had done a decent amount of work already towards making it cafe. RF caliper is leaky and battery needs to be recharged at the least.
I borrowed the nice snap-on camera tool from my shop today to have a better look inside. I noticed what looked like may be a nick on the right side forward piston. So, I'll retime it this weekend and try to fire it up and see what happens.
Probably wont do too much to the bike, finish the small things. I plan on getting a new seat. I'll do a new cluster setup as well, probably two mini gauges for mph and rpm. Repaint the tank and side covers, polish the wheels and make an exhaust.
Anyways, here it is. Ill post a better picture tonight.

Welcome, you'll like it here.
Heads are available if you end up needing one. Use OEM head gaskets. Might as well lap the valves, etc.

Re: First Goldwing, first cafe build
Thanks for the warm welcome. Ya, I've already shopped out heads, they are cheap. My good friend runs a Head shop, so that will also be cheap, if needed. I've also read a few places that OEM head gaskets are the ONLY way to go on these. So I wont be taking a shortcut there.

Welcome from the UK. Hope there wasn't to much damage if the belts did snap. New members are always being told to change the belts before anything else. Be interesting to see what happened if they did, you may be lucky but if not, this is the place to get help.

That is some good news. She is a looker. It is none of my business, but if you picked her up under the assumption that the timing belts had snapped, I hope you got her for a song.

Re: First Goldwing, first cafe build
Back in the early 90's I stopped roadside to look at a clean little 81 honda accord four door
Automatic with air with 75000 miles. $400 dollars. I called the number and they lived a block away. An 18 year old came over. The car beLonged to his grandparents. I bought it. It was running very ruff. Got it for $250 with the snow tires at home in garage.
When I got it home I found an unhooked spark plug wire. That kind of deal has not come up since. I keep looking.
