Rear tire Rubbing very outside of the chicken strip

#1

Post by Bearpaw »

Ok guys 84 1200 Interstate I posted about air leaks but I don't think I have one anymore ( loose fittings) but I am still rubbing the very outside of the tire should i bend the ear of the fender the side near the gas tank or go with a smaller tire I really like the stock size being wide anyone had this issue. Thanks

I wouldn't go smaller than the stock size, and if it is the stock size, then it shouldn't rub. Which means that something is not right (or left, lol). I would check the wheel and tire over carefully for alignment, wobble, or damage to the tire itself. My 2 cents!

Agree, I would inspect the installation very thoroughly. Get a print out of the parts breakdown and take it apart and make sure every single piece of the axle system is in place. Quite often a spacer or similar is missing or installed backwards.

There also is a specific order to tighten everything up when installing the wheel/tire. Don't have my manual handy, but IIRC, the axle needs to be tightened while the differential is loosely mounted; the diff is tightened last... I think!

as everyone else says, a stock sized tire should not rub, so something is wrong

Everything I've seen has a 150/90/15 on the back and a 130/90/16 on the front. I think your bike is saying, somtink wrong.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

It does sound like something isn't right. Maybe a spacer installed on the wrong side? The parts fiche should show the assembly order.
TrackT is correct in the tightening order if you've had the final drive off. Axle gets tightened first to align everything, and then the final drive gets tightened up to the swingarm. Once that is done, then it doesn't have to be done again unless the final drive comes off again. If the final drive gets tightened up first, it can cause a slight binding and quicker wear at the big drive spline.
If the tire is only hitting at one spot you could have a bent rim.

another quirk about the 1200. If you take off the pumpkin, the drive shaft has a seal on it which inserts into the pumpkin (gear oil then lubes the splines of the shaft and the pumpkin)... anyway, if you take the saft off, you HAVE TO replace the seal or it will leak. To replace it you have to remove the shaft from the swing arm

I can't add anything, but just for clarification, is it hitting the swingarm or the fender? Photo would help. If it is the swingarm, then the previous advice about spacers and such should be checked out.
