Front Brakes - Is This All There Is?

#1

Post by BlueThunder »

Okay, maybe I'm misssing something. But what holds the front brake pads in the caliper? My F bikes have pins that go through the pads that hold the pads into the caliper. All I see on the GL are a ridge that the pads hang on. Is this all that holding the pads? What happens when the pad wears? Looking at the parts diagram I don't see anything missing. Am I over thinking this?

There are pins. I think they're the same as your F bikes.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Thry hold the caliper to the fork. Look at the pads. There are not any holes. The pads look identical to the diagram.

Do you have part #10? That holds pressure on the pads.
There don't have to be pins. Many cars have no pins holding the pads. These brakes have works for years just fine with this setup. Just put it all back together the same way it came apart.

No pins, you push down on the pads against the spring part #10. The two "ears" on the brake pad fit under the bracket either side of where the rotor goes through it. The rotor itself keeps the pads from reaching the slot where they can be removed. It always takes me a few times looking at it to figure it out.

That's what I thought, but it just seems too simple...

Well, I finally got around to replacing the front brake pads. To put a finality on this thread, yes it is that simple! The pads fit into the caliper mounting brackets, and one can see how and what holds the pads in place. This is my first Gold Wing and things are different from my other bikes. As RB stated... KISS. There definitely is a beauty in this simplicity.
