You will have to "retime" the points plate to the cams (statically).. Because of the major works you have undertaken nothing is as it was!!!!! The points baseplate is adjustable/movable to allow for "wear" etc.... ..... Whilst your there you may as well check the point gap...FADM Stern GNSF wrote: Question ? When I removed the points assembly, it came off as one unit. Will I have to set the points again as the plate never moved ?

Re: 78 GL1000 Head gasket job and valve work
Great, thanks for the info. Hoping that once I get the engine running well I can move on to fixing all the other bits (calipers etc) and with any luck get to take my first ride on it

Re: 78 GL1000 Head gasket job and valve work
LOL most of the time ... this time it means work got in the way of me doing anything on it Have to do another 150km away crap job today, but plan on grabbing some new fluids for the bike while im in transit. If all works well (and customers leave me alone for a day) Im hoping to set the points and valves tomorrow, put some fluids in and see how it runs.

Re: 78 GL1000 Head gasket job and valve work
Well, finally went out today to tackle the bike even though its hot out there. First, worked on the timing which was a hyge pain. got points for right set great, left wouldnt come close to T2. After much playing and increasing the gap to almost the max value i seemed to get it prety close. Valve adjustment went easy as pie. Muflers on, rad on ( I hate that thing lol) and fluids in.
Went to start it, wouldnt fire kid noticed i didnt plug the points calbe back in lol. Started right up, but oil everywhere OK, forgot the tining cap lol.
Finally, started up well and all 4 firing (ignoring the huge smoke plumes as the engine warms up). Here is what it did engine cold with the choke all the way in (took a few min)
And here is what it did when fully warmed up (fan on and rad burped)
I hope it sounds ok as it seems to sound much better than the first time I ran it and had the head gasket go. Any comments greatly appreciated

It sounds OK to me... Once you get a few hundred kilometers on it will settle it down and maybe quieter.. But, IMO nothing wrong with the present noise values...

Re: 78 GL1000 Head gasket job and valve work
Thanks a lot for the post, being only used to the CX500 sounds its really hard for me to judge. At least now I can continue on with fixing up all the other bits that need doing to get it on the road.
