Loud screech/whine noise
When I started my bike yesterday all of a sudden it began to have a loud screech/ whine noise. I shut it down immediately. Today I got it onto the table and started it. The noise is coming from the stator area. It is still charging and runs fine except for the noise.
I don't know if I want to pull the motor and tackle this job but if I decide to what should I expect to find wrong with the stator. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thx Bob.

at the back of the engine, unbolt a quarter+ sized cover that gives access to the rotor(?) securing bolt, that can backout

Re: Loud screech/whine noise
Might it be the starter is not disengaging? Just a guess.
I need to remember to keep my expectations tiny so I don't end up so whiny.

Re: Loud screech/whine noise
IMO its the starter clutch not "engaging" correctly due to a weak or low battery... Give it a full charge and also use a jumper battery and try again ... You will most likely find the noise has disappeared!!....

Re: Loud screech/whine noise
I think I have it figured out. The screeching noise is being caused by the starter clutch. It sometimes just spins. Usually it works on the second try. It always starts and runs well. Cold blooded but runs smoothly after a few minutes. When I first got the bike the starter clutch took several tries to engage. When it's warm out first try works. Currently 33 degrees here. So probably the starter clutch rollers aren't fully retracting once the engine starts.
I don't really know what to do next. I was thinking of giving it a sea foam treatment to hopefully help loosen up the starter clutch rollers. If anybody has any good suggestions I would really appreciate them.

Re: Loud screech/whine noise
Got it to work correctly. Sprayed PBBlaster onto rotor as I turned over the motor by hand. Started it brought it to operating temp. Sprayed the PBBlaster again. Let it set while I did chores.
Took it off table made a run and held motor a 5 grand a few times in 3rd gear. Came back to house and she idles with no extra noise.
I know I need to replace the started clutch rollers and springs but maybe this will work til I get motivated.
Looks like my other bikes will get some riding time

Re: Loud screech/whine noise
A crankcase flush will often cure the "sticky roller" issue. I've come across references to the rollers developing flat spots and needing replacement, but I've never seen it.

Re: Loud screech/whine noise
There is another "fix" drilling a hole in the right place, install a port so you can spray solvent directly at the rollers. There are a couple of threads with pics..on this site. 3rd pic shows the "cleaning" with the engine out and cover off..but where the hole gives you access to the cleaning ports on the clutch itself.

Re: Loud screech/whine noise
Now that is a great idea. Put in a cleaning port to use when needed.
Add that to my project list. I will use my extra engine to measure and make sure I place it correctly.

For drillers, you'll probably get better advice at a machinists forum, but I experimented on a sacrificial piece of aluminum first. I found it best to keep lots of grease around the drill bit so that you could see it swirling and pulling shavings up and out. In my first attempt on the sacrificial piece, I stopped when the drillbit was going through. I did this above of a piece of paper towel so that I could see if anything would fall, and a big hunk of grease and shavings did fall in. The second time I maintained the drill moving all the way until it went through, it is difficult without it wanting to catch it at the end, but I slowed down and it went through cleanly. If I were to do it again, I think I would make "dam" of clay to keep a reservoir of grease around the bit. This was dangerous.
