Hi all, probably been asked before - can the central instrument panel be swapped out for a non instrument panel on the 79 GL1000?

???? you can always take the gauges out, and fab a blank panel to cover up the holes

I believe he's asking if he can replace the stock instrument panel with individual gauges as in '75-'77.

I think he is talking about the top shelter gauges and the 75-77 does not have those. The Fuel quantity and the temp are built into the earlier tach and speedo.

But to the OP 's question yes you can unplug and remove the cluster and nothing will happen except you will not have that information.

Sorry guys, I've caused confusion. Not very good at making myself clear!

I have been looking at a 1979 GL K3 for sale that has the 3 gauges on the central tank panel. I prefer the cleaner look of earlier and later tanks that don't have the gauges situated like this. I was wondering if there were options for change? Other than just buy a different model that is ? Hope that reads better!

Many people have changed the entire shelter to an older or newer model. Shouldn't be too difficult, the shelter frame will swap with no modifications. Just need to re-mount the different electrics under the left side. And if you want to still know what's going on with the engine, swap out the main dials with combination units.

Thanks all. It sounds like the 'shelter' is what I 'm talking about. So I can replace the 'shelter'and relocate the gauges. I could always revert back to the original if needs be.
Thanks again.

Probably should stick with 75-77 shelters..the gl1100's didn't have the electronic mounted on the sides like gl1000's so would be a lot more work to change out. And you'd have to change all the plastics of the shelter too as between 75-77 and 78-79 they are not the same at all. Also if I remember correctly the gas spout is off a bit so you probably have to redrill/move the opening in the shelter base a bit. You might check the custom forum for examples someone may have done this already??? note some have moved all the gauges into the top panel like the gas gauge on the 75-77's

Just so happens I have a 75 shelter and the side and top panels..If interest I can send pics and figure out a price.
