Plans for Winter

When next on leave I intend to take the engine out to do a couple of things, new neutral switch, new pulser shaft and pin etc, and to try to sort out an oil leak!

The oil leak, I think, is coming from the front of the engine. I suspect it is either from the two halves of the block, which will mean separation and reseal, or from the crankshaft seal. Item 13 in the picture.

If it's the seal, can this be replaced just by pulling the old one out and pressing a new one in?

To check where the leak is, I had the idea of removing the radiator, and replacing it with a length of hose and filling with water, and running the engine for a short time with the belt covers off and using a mark 1 eyeball to see if the leak is apparent! What are your thoughts on that, in my head it should be ok as water will still be in the system cooling the engine, although obviously I'd monitor it so it didn't get too hot. Also, what is the internal size of the hose I'd need to get?

Seal can be done just like you said. Unlikely it is from the case joint line. That usually doesn't just start leaking like a seal would. You could try the water hose set up. You may not have to run it very long though before it starts to leak. Depends on how bad the leak is.

Thanks for that Robin. The fact is, I had to separate the casings on my initial build to sort out another leak. Sorted that out ok so hoping the casings are ok. Did put a new seal on the crank shaft on the rebuild, so shouldn't be faulty either. Just hope this doesn't drag on like my last effort! lolol

Does anyone know the internal diameter of the radiator hoses?
