balls or taper?

#1

Post by rcmatt007 »

I am refurbishing my '76 LTD. I know that it has balls in the steering stem. Can these be replaced with tapered bearings, or do I need to capture the balls  and put them back if I remove the stem?

All Balls bearings makes a bearing for the 1200, tapered. I've used them in several motorcycles and they hold up well.

I looked up the bearings for a 76.

I have used them on my 78 and 79. I know the steering stem is different on a '75 and you cannot put tapered bearings on it, but I am uncertain about the 76

I went to the all balls website and went through their vehicle selection for the 76. Didn't try the 75.

Put them on the 76 that we just did... worked fine. Not an LTD, don't rightly know if that makes a difference or not.

so it looks like they will fit a 76.... but I know from experience you cannot put them on a 75 stem

it appears, looking at the all balls site (shouldn't it be "all taper?") The make them for 75-76 and then 77-79. I know when I tried to put them on a 75 stem, the lower race would not go on as the stem was a little too big. So there must be different sizes.

kit number 75-76 is 22-1011 and 77-79 is 22-1020

when I check EBAY.... the listings are all over the place and mostly incorrect.... caveat emptor

There was a mid year change on the 76. Early 76's take a different kit than later ones. I found this out when doing the Super Sport Wing.
